Oil cooler bypass valve test

My oil temps are running awfully high and I'd like to pull the bypass valve out of my oil cooler and test it. The engine is being broken in and I'm due for an oil change. Is there any reason I can't pull the valve out of the oil cooler, test it and put it back in or replace it before putting fresh oil in? I'm looking at D-14 of FSM and I don't see any washers, is this true? I'd think there would be a copper crush washer.

For those searching for similar info, it's D-14 of FSM and procedure is to simply remove the valve, heat it up in oil to 149 F/65C and measure the protrusion of the valve. It should be 5mm. min.

I've never seen one of these valves, can I simply warm it up with a MAP torch? I've got a temp gun and can hit with that for temp.

If I find the bypass valve is working fine, can the OEM hoses collapse and block flow without rupturing?

there is a gasket, 9956-42-200, list price is $3.58

i wouldn't heat the thing up with a torch, i would put it in water. the FSM method has you put it in a bag of oil, and then boiling water

For the curious or those needing the info, I pulled an oil cooler stat from a spare oil cooler and tested it. I didn't measure temps or how much the stat opened but the pics show that opens.

unopened and cool

hot and opened
