I have an 89 rx7 convertible and I am getting coolant mixing with the oil. Put a coolant pressure tester on it and pressure drops with no external leaks. The motor runs fine (well I dont run it anymore). I was told I will need the motor pulled and resealed. I know nothing about these motors. Is this common? Are there other things to worry about such as cracks in block, heads or whatever they are called on these rotary motors? Also anyone know expected cost or place that would do it in the Wisconsin area. It's a nice car other than this.😁 about 90k on motor
Do you get any sweet smelling smoke out of the exhaust? Usually coolant loss is a sign that the coolant seals have given out. On FC engines specifically, this is usually because the groove that the seal sits in has been corroded away, so you'll likely need at least one new iron / side housing (one of the pieces that make up the rotary engine sandwich).
You'll need a full set of soft seals to rebuild, and you might as well replace the hard seals and springs as well if it's a nice car. If you DIY and don't do any upgrades, that should run $1.2-2k, if you get a shop to do the rebuild or start adding parts it'll be north of $3k most likely.
Both Madzatrix and Atkins Rotary are good sources for parts, both have a number of rebuild kits with different parts depending on what all you decide to replace.
No smoke or anything unordinary...thanks for the info...I can handle the price just finding someone that knows how to work on these is a bigger issue so far. I didn't want to proceed with seals if I should be worried about cracks. I appreciate it.
Banzai Racing is in Indiana, that might be the closest unless someone is in the Chicago area. However, if you have some mechanical experience and the right tools, it's really not that difficult to do yourself. There are couple very detailed videos out there detailing the process; you could invest $25 on one to see if it's something you think you could tackle.
