A little oil is normal. The crankcase vent runs into the intake, plus the turbo will allow a very tiny bit to seep past the seals. However a lot usually means oil blow by in the turbo. Caused by excessive crankcase pressure or bad oil seals.

The only thing I can think of is the fact when the engine is running the intake side of the butterflies would have air pushing on them, pushing the oil off them. The rear side of the butterflies would not and hence the oil still being on it.

Mine was so thick with oil that it looked like mud.

I think its somewhat normal since my car doesnt burn oil. Not even through the metering system.

I asked a similar question a while back... remember that we have overlap between intake and exhaust phases, and that some of the oily, gunky exhaust gases can get shoved out into the intake. Over time the buildup can go clear to the throttle plates. Mine wasn't too bad but it definitely went that far, as well as yours. Apparently this is not a bad thing (assuming its not an excessive amount), and seems to be pretty universal. Just clean it out best you can and let the rest go...

You should take off the upper and lower intakes and clean them completely. Ive done it quite a few times. Let me know if you need some help. Ill be out of town next week though.

Well, I mean I dont know if its major. It depends on how much is in there, and what the texture is. How many miles have the intakes seen? As far as the fuel rails leaking, Im not sure what youre talkin about. You could do a rubber tune up while youve got intakes off. Replace the rubber from the hardline to the rails and back. Replace the O-rings, and the grommets between the injectors and the rails. The only thing you should worry about leaking is the Pulsation Dampner.

As far as cleaner, id use carb cleaner.

When I have to clean **** I use castrol heavy duty degreaser. Works like a charm, pics:

That was with barely any scrubbing. Infact I just wiped it with a cloth then rinsed it off.

For washing inside the manifolds I spray some of that junk in, throw it in the back of my truck (fumes are nasty if you put it in the car) and go to a car wash. The pressure washers work great
