Yeah I'd stay away from synthetic. From what I gather it doesn't burn very well and can cause seal leaks. Stick with 20W-50 or 10W-30 ( i heard 10W-40 can leave excess carbon deposits in the engine? ) I use Castrol, I they make a pretty good oil

Hey fellas, what oil viscosity should I use in my beater '87 Corolla FX? 20-50 or 10-30 or 30?? I'd like to use the thinnest possible so I'll get better gas mileage but I don't wan't to comprimise the reliability of the engine. Thanks.

motor oil
AAAAAHHHHH The old motor oil question?????
The problem with valvoline racing oil is that it has a lot of zink content!!! This is great in a regular piston engine because of all the moving parts, This compound protects metal parts from seazing if the oil film goes away, Like between cam and lifters etc. The problem with having this high amount of zink {.20} is that it causes sparkplug fowling !!!
I`ve driven my 87 N/T 250,000 miles with 20/50 castrol, Low ash content, and just enough zink to get by {.11}.
Hope this helps?
