"Oh. That's bad" - Cracked LSD *PICS*

This post has no technical merrit, I just felt like sharing the latest discovery on my 89 GTUs. For the last couple of months the car has had a pulsation from the rear of the car. I eliminated the drive shafts, half shafts, and rear wheel bearings as the source, so I pulled the diff. Opening the case revealed this:

I was hoping for a bad side bearing... Oh well. Anyone have a used NA Viscous LSD or Miata Torsen LSD for sale? I didn't think so...

Jeff

Me neither. "NA POWAH BABY!"

It never occured to me when I was taking this thing apart that it would be damaged like that! I'm really surprised that the internal gears didn't lodge/jam together with the extra clearance inside the LSD case.

i have an NA clutch-type lsd (i'm told; should be S4) i want to get rid of. its hella rusted, but i can take a pic like that of the inside. Santiago may want it back, so i'd have to talk with him first. just seeing if you'd be interested. most people prefer the clutch-type i thought, so i thought i'd say something.

I prefer to say "wow, that's not good." It's a little more optimistic then saying "that's bad."

I've never seen that before, thanks for including the picture.

"Woah momma!!" would've been my reaction. Thats pretty ugly.....God i'd love to sit down and take a look at that and see if i can tell what caused the crack. Maybe a kink caused by some metal shavings?
Impure material causing pre-mature failure?

God i'm bored.....

DAYMN i thought diffs were supposed to be alot stronget than that.

but what you could do to try and figure out the cause is send it down to a local college to the material science area, and they can test to see if it wqas a stress related fracture or a fatigue (over time stress) and thy could tell you the gist of it

I found nothing in the diff fluid. No metal 'chunks' and no shavings. There was some metallic sheen suspended in the fluid, but no more than I've seen on usual flushes. Oh, I was running Royal Purple gear oil in the case.

Basically there was no obvious clue as to what caused this. About the only thing I can think of would be a casting defect from the factory.

Nice work... I'd be passing around the beers and cigars!

As far as breaking the viscous LSD's go, that ones still fairly intact. When they go, they tend to make a lot more of a grenade-like effect.

LOL! Bastard! I barely even chirped them at rotorfest...

Well, SonicRaT called me out. I do have a tendancy to abuse the tires on this car. I'm sure my driving style had something to do with this failure. But if my wife asks, it was caused by a casting defect!!!
