Odd Question about EMS

I went and looked at an 87TII today and immediatly noticed it had an aftermakert EMS. The older gentlemen who owned did not install it and couldn't tell me much about it. I did notice a distributor cap and wires where the CAS would normally be, that is not normal for an S4 correct? I have only owned an S5 and never had looked under the hood of an S4 save one with a 13B-RE underneath it.

He had something written down on a peice of paper that said EMD I or something like that. I know this description is ******* horridble but he didn't exactly know what it was either. I noticed a Greddy Profec B, and old school HKS BOV. It also had a different IC on it, from a mitsubishi or something. It had DOHC on the top of it. I am going back tomorrow to test drive it so I will take pictures and write things down this time. Anyone know what EMS uses a distributer cap?

Damn, could it be some sort of hackjob, non rotary ems? The car runs strong and idles kinda lopey but pretty steady. Tomorrow I am gonna take pics of the EMS, it is in the glove compartment.

Probably a fuel-only ECU. Not very common these days but it used to be all you could get.

So Jason, is it detrimental to the life of the rotary to have such an old school setup? Or should I opt for another EMS?

Old school worked back then so it'll work just as good now, but only if it's been installed and tuned properly. Even a brand new megabuck EMS can be highly detrimental to your engine if it's not tuned right. The fact that it's still going probably indicates that it's okay. Let us know how the test drive goes.

Well this is interesting! The car's EMS isn't so old school. In fact it is newer. It's an SDS EFI.
http://www.sdsefi.com/ I need to do some reading up about it but we will see. And last time I didn't notice the MSD packs...two coils, I took pics too

The car's tach is broken so when I drove it I didn't get too crazy. It started very easily on the cold morning today(6:50am) had trouble idling but after 30 seconds or so it was lopey but steady. Drove it a little bit to warm it up of course, in the mean time it would die often at stop signs and what not. Pulled very hard though, the few times I did let the engine unwind. When I popped the hood I noticed that the ACV and BAC are removed, the seals didn't look to great so it probably is causing a vac leak. Took some shots of the MSD ignition and the SDS in the glove compartment.

Now, one things troubles me. The AC components are hooked up, but the belt is off. Now, am I mistaken that if the BAC and/or ACV is removed, the AC will be inoperable??

That could sway my decision enough not to buy the car btw, its Florida, its hot as hell in the summer and I live an hour from the beach.

That lean/rich **** strikes me as very funny for some reason... Sort of like those "Easy" button commercials.

Sweet, I found those EMS systems online a few months ago and was hoping someone would post something about them. Let us know how everything goes.

Yea, I have never heard of this EMS before so, it is really unique to see it being used on a rotary(to me anyhow).

But about the A/C? Can you still run it without the ACV or BAC? I thought for sure that without either or, it wasn't possible to run it. I pretty much need the A/C for where I live to enjoy this car on the many sunny days that I experience.
