Do FCs use OBD1 or 2 or what?

almost no cars before 96 have OBD2. Pretty sure it is a mazda proprietary OBD system.

Yeah i didnt figure it had oBD2, that sucks, having to buy a specific scan tool is really dumb, imo

should be able to pull codes via one method or another easily enough. Do a search. I know the S5 cars are very easy to pull codes from.

Sadly, we don't have any simple way like the DSM's to datalog, I believe the RTEK people are trying to devise a way to datalog with their new chip. I don't believe the RX7's even come with any form.

reTED said NO RX7 (stateside, i dont know what other countries use) is OBD compliant.
OBD2 was a federal law in 96; some cars started in 95 (not sure about california law). OBD1 has many different plugs, but OBD2 made everything standard.
though most of us have no easy quick access to OBD scanners, i would say i wouldnt mind my car being OBD compliant. my friend has worked with them and loves them. they get scanners that tell you about everything, we get a blinking light. yea, we're so lucky.
(only good thing is that blinking light is its free; too bad it tells us next to nothing).

Pulling the codes from our cars is easy. You bridget the Green plug next to the battery to ground and then turn the car to on. The Check engine light will blink the codes.

OBD2 went into effect in 1996... and was one of the reasons there were no 1996 model year US versions of the RX-7

helpful, yes. informative, not so much. you cant really compare a blinking light to a freakin expensive scanning tool. in fact, i was told the scanner even gives you (line?) graphs.
OBD2 is smart. its almost _too_ smart.

doesn't obd2 really suck for intake/exhaust mods??? I remember when I had a 98 prelude with an obd2 and all the people that had my year and later preludes where trying to get the obd1's. Now don't quote me on this but I heard it actually detunes your upgrades (intake / exhaust) to comply with stock specs, or something like that.

i believe this is in fact true. the second O2 sensor (after the cat) especially cares and will throw a light. however, i know they make a "everything's okay" sensor that replaces the second O2 sensor for RX8s (not sure what all other cars or if its universal). i cant imagine how illegal that is, though.
i dont know how much intake/exhaust affects emissions or how much OBD2 reacts to it. its one reason i dont want to own anything newer than 95. i can't imagine what serious upgrades would do, but i know there's ways around it as there's plenty of fast 96+ modded cars. i doubt theyre all running standalones (though i know Fbody ecu upgrades are a lot cheaper than, say, a haltech. closer to the price of apex'i stuff).

too bad you'll never get a highly modded obd2 car smogged in an emission controlled state even if its emissions are actually clean.

they plug that thing it and immediatly it'll say "this car has been tampered with, burn the owner at the stake for daring to change their car!!"

actually i believe there's ways around it. i mean, come on, its a computer ! jesus, kids hack websites, some kid (in sweden) cracked the dvd code or whatever. these are simple car computers. there's almost always another way. but, yes, on average, anything that ups the emissions will screw you if youre legit obd2. then again, this thread has no use here since we're not even obd1.

my buddy turbo'd his KA 240sx in cali. he had an s14, and ended up getting an s13 to do it with for obd1 vs the newer's obd2. if you get an obd2 smog then there needs to be the right 'puter hooked up to the smoggeybox at the time for everything to go through. if you don't have an obd2 car, well then they punch in you have an rx7, hook up a civic to the smoggeybox and there we go :P
