o2 sensor question

A few days ago I put on my RB full exhaust and got to take a look at my o2 sensor and it looked chalky khaki w/ the slightest hint of pink.... I was wondering if this is normal wear or a sign of a problem.

The khaki color is normal, but I usually recommend changing them whenever you have them out.

do an error code check. fc3s.org has an explanation it will tell you if the o2 is bad.

I did the full RB turboback install today and looked at my o2 sensor and it is just like you described. I'm gonna order a new one from kragen. I think this is the bosch part # 12054

So can we tell if we are running rich or lean from looking at the discoloration of the o2 sensor? I know we can tell this from injectors but just wondering what the o2 sensor can tell us.

Will a functioning O2 sensor, that may not be 100% cause poor gas milage?

I only get about 270km to the tankful!

I think the o2 sensor affects gas mileage at highway cruising speeds. Puts the ecu into loop mode I think.

Bump for my question and confirmation of what I just said.

That is absolutely pathetic. You have problems much bigger then an O2 sensor if you only get 167 miles to the tank.

most O2 sensors really need to take a DIVE before setting off an ECU code, it's a good idea to change them periodically bc even if a check engine light or code isn't pulled from the ECU they could be reading or cycling slowly or abnormally and hurt your mileage and driveability...being coated in soot and crap doesn't help but thats pretty much normal, especially for a modded TII without cats. change them once a year w/ your tune up - never worry about them again. I change everything once a year (O2 sensor, plugs, wires, fuel filter, coolant etc...)
