CA O2 sensor

How do you go about finding out if your o2 sensor works or not?

The idea is it is changed periodically, and in theroy it shouldn't fail inbetween that time.

If you wanted to check i'm sure you could get the engine nice and hot, use a multimeter to read off the voltage signal coming from the sensor and check against specs.

There only $20, not gonna break the bank to buy one

Yeah. Do what he said.

Or get the engine hot. Go the sensor in the engine bay. Pull the plug off the 02 sensor. Put your meters positive lead on the 02 connector and the negative lead on a known ground on the engine. The 02 sensor should read B/t 0-1vdc. If the engine has all the emissions devices working the sensor will read a very low figure. IF that's the case and you have a non turbo engine, then pull the Blue connector of the relief solenoid. Now the 02 figure will be close to 0.8vdc. Got a turbo car with all emissions? Pull the switching hose off the ACV and plug that line. Now the turbo 02 will read closer to 0.8vdc.

Or to see if the 02 sensor is being seen by the ECU and if the ECU is making corrections while your driving (going into closed loop), you can do the following on a series four car. Go to the ECU. Find pin 1D a yellow wire. Connect you LED's neg wire to that yellow wire. Then put your LED's positive wire to a source of switched power like pin 3I of the small ECU plug.

Turn the key to ON and the LED will light up for approx 3seconds and go out. Now go for a ride. When you get over approx 15mph and the engine is over 120*F, the LED will go on/off a couple times a second as you drive along at a steady speed. That shows the ECU is going into closed loop. Step hard on the pedal and the light will go out. Come back to a more or less steady speed and the light will once more go on/off at about twice a second.

This idea was stolen from the FC3S site and it's been on that site for a decade or more. They use the green, six socket connector in the engine bay though. Same thing but I use the wires at the ECU. A toy to tell if the 02 is making communication with the ECU and if the ECU is going into closed loop or ....not.
