now the thing wont idle!!

ok you have seen me around. i love this car and am making progress, but its starting to aggrivate me because i dont know enough about these blasted futuristic rotaries. it used to not have spark, got that fixed(thanks evryone). then it would sputter and die, got that fixed. now it runs but i have to blip the throttle to keep her going, it has tons of power cuz i drove it around yesterday. i start the car, it fires within 2 rotations of the starter, but if i let it go it will just wind down and die. it will run just fine as long as i have some pedal movement, its not even that much. like moving it a hare will keep it running. so what gives? thanks alot guys for helping me so much. if it wasnt for this forum, i prolly would have scrapped this car out. hopefully i can get pics of it on here soon.

Well it seems to me you need a AFM/MAFS(Air Flow Meter/Mass Air Flow Sensor).Get that checked out.....that has to be the problem from your description.

no, it wont. i drove it for a good half hour and afterwards i pulled 'er back in the garage and it died. so maybe. that was what i was thinking too. is there a way i can convert to a maf? instead of this flapper vaine thing, easily? prolly will require a new computer and all the other supporting devices huh.

Its deffinatlly the AFM/MASF.You can find one here in the for sale section or on Nopistons for sale section.I found and bought one for $50 shipped from the for sale section and its worked great.Anyway I think there is a way to convert to the maf but im not aware how to do the conversion....search and see what you find.

I honestly don't understand why someone would right off the bat say afm. I'm not saying it isn't......but I've never had a problem with a afm (therefore no one else should, yeah). It could be something as simple as a engine that needs it's idle set plus the bac gone **** up or the timing being too far advanced/retarded.

Take a few minutes to read a recent post by SCATHCART to a thread titled Mutiple Idle Questions at https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=248200 or this one http://www.teamfc3s.org/info/articles/idle.html which applies in part to turbos or non turbos.

That one by Scathcat is good.

And I think a good place to start is with the throttle stop screw. You could adjust it(idle stop screw), til the car at least idles so that you can get under the hood and listen/adjust/spray starter fluid etc..... while it's running.

cool. i will look. i was playing with the timing when i took out the cas to do your nifty spark checker deal, so im sure it is off, even though i marked evrything and reset it to that. i will let you guys know tomorrow.oh yeah, i was looking at the meter, and there is the wide plug, and that is plugged in tight, but there is another plug(a two prong one) that has that fuzzy stuff on it, and its not plugged in to anything. i cant see where it plugs into. maybe thats the cause too. do you guys know where that one goes?

Buy or borrow a timing light right away and set the timing first.

Well at least your weren't a total *******. Anyway your right AFMs don't really give out but just because yours didn't doesn't mean others won't....mine went on me.Its the fact he has to hold down the gas a little to keep it running which were the same symtoms that I had when my AFM took a dump on me.Thats why I say its the AFM and I highly believe its the problem here.

what should the timing be for max performance. like for instance, the 5.0 mustang is supposed to be set at 8* advance timing but you can gain 8-10 ponies with 14-18* initial timing. is this the case with the rotary as well?

there was a vaccuum canister that was hooked to the air pump that got killed in a backing up incodent, so now its just a hose coming out of the air pump. should i try to block that off? it was intact when this started happening though.

acv?? yeah it was just sitting above the pass wheel scoop, so when i took that off, it just hung there. then my buddy backed er up for me and it got smooshed. do you knokw where the pigtail goes? its a 2 prong plug that goes into the same loom that the vaf plug goes into. it also has fuzzy glued to it. thats just hanging in the breeze too.

Sometimes they just do that.

My rebuilt 86 idles very smoothly and runs great.

I've Never ever been able to fix the cold idle problem. Just have to sit there for about 30 seconds every cold morning startup. After I start it, then she fluxtuates between 1500 and 2500 for about about a minute or so before she calms back down and idles correctly..

That's a thermowax problem. Either mal adjusted or maybe it's been taken off the throttle body by someone prior to your ownership.

How does the thermowax become mal adjusted? How do you correctly readjust it?

I had the problem of not idling while cold for a good 3 weeks but it seems to have gone away completely.
