so let's start over from the begining.. i bought an S4 SE. it was stripped of almost everything under the hood and the interior wiring harness was a complete mess. so i swapped the harness from my s4 GXL into the SE. i've got power to my starter, fuse box, and alternator. i hooked up almost everything that needs to be hooked up under the dash. when i turn the ignition, nothing happens.

mind you, i have the motor, coils, etc. in already. but the intercooler piping, rad. hoses, etc. are not hooked up. i don't want it to START it obviously. i just want it to get power so i can look up some stuff on my microtech hand controller. the battery is a new optima relocated to the rear.

i feel everything is hooked up. the grounding is good and every thing.

but what's that clip on the starter for? is that suppose to go to the ingnition? it looks like every thing is hooked up under there? the FSM doesn't say what it's for or where is goes. i'm guessing i could just run a wire from the starter and splice it to one of the wires for the ignition?

Isn't that clip the solenoid switch wich actually tells the starter to... start?

 

Are you talking about the single prong on the start? There should be a black clip that goes onto it.

 

ok, i hooked that up. still nothing.

wait... i think it was a white clip that lead to the starter prong, not black. the wire color is yellow/red.

 

wellll.. yellow red is also the wire color the oil pressure gauge, sensor, and condensor...

Project84, it's the ignition tab! can you or anyone else tell me what color that wire is?

That wire on a series four, runs from the starter.......to the plug that attaches to the starter cut relay if you have theft protection (if no theft protection, then it goes to a jumper in the plug that would attach to the starter cut relay).....from there it goes to the clutch interlock switch and from there to the ignition switch.

It's right there in the online fsm, that is a free download.

ah, ok.. so i went out and i found that red and black wire that leads to the ignition under the dash. i followed that wire tooooo....... NOTHING. it's been terminated. i DID have an aftermarket alarm installed, but that wire has been cut.

i downloaded adobe 7.0... it's STILL not working..
so i've searched even more and found a quote from sonicrat..

i'm not sure what he says about the clutch switch. do i just do this:

the starter>the clutch switch wire>the other clutch switch wire>the red/black ignition wire

 

should only have to go through the clutch switch once i thought?

 

we HAVE already established that there is powuh to the starter through the fat wire from the batt and that is IS properly grounded (negative), right?
When you turn the key, does it click like the solenoid is trying to go?

 

no, it doesn't click. see, my ignition is not hooked up to anything at all. so nothing will be clicking. i have everything else wired nice and smoothly, no problem there.

remember, i am NOT trying to start the car. i am just trying to get the acc. to turn on.

 

ok... took a pic today.

you can see the clutch switch and the two wires coming out of it. which wire do i splice for the black and red wire?

believe me. if i can open up the manual, i'd be all over it...

Hmm, first thing I would do is check that the blue ACC feed wire to the cabin fuse box has voltage when the key is turned. This will tell you whether the problem lies before the ignition switch, or after. Might also be a good idea to check the main black feed into the ignition switch for power, because if you ain't getting it there, it's no wonder everything is dead.

I'm assuming here that the main fuse is good...

BTW, I still haven't torn down that tranny completely for overhaul yet, lol...

i'll try and check those wires after work tomorrow. all fuses are good, i know that. i also know that the harness is somewhat cut up.... great.

hurry up with that tranny man! you'll feel better when you have that extra insurance.

You need to get your hands on the schematics in the FSM wiring manual- for a problem such as this you're going to have to start at square one and work your way down the circuits...

I'll get to the tranny one of these days, lol...
