not very drivable!!!!!

howdy
so my problem lies within my clutch. i am figurin i have to replace it, i am ready for that, i am more overly wondering why it happened as the clutch was just replaced. the clutch was fine, a little trouble going into reverse sometimes, but nothing serious. and then, after work yesterday, i got in, and the clutch felt empty. when i push down on it the resistance is present only in the last 1/3 of the pedal. i couldn't get it into first for the life of me at the intersection. i tried second, wouldnt go in, third it went in, but it was too low a gear for me to start in, and if there was indeed a clutch problem i didnt want to burn it out by winding the rpms to start rolling. after that, the clutch was 50/50. sometimes it would slide right in, other times it would just lock in the H crossbar. and while in that nuetral position, i could hear a slight rattling, very minute, but there. what i want to know is why this happened, if my clutch just needs adjusting, if i can do it myself, and if this is a common thing with rx's, maybe my tranny is the prob? the tranny seems to be in great condition, i just dont know what to do. thank you for your help.
