Not for the Timid: The Nastiest Place to Clean on your RX-7

Yo,

Well, I detailed my engine bay. Not too hard, waxed the firewall, fender bulges, etc. It looks really good. But my eyes kept going to the black NVH blanket that is on the underside of the hood.

For the love of your sanity, STAY AWAY from it. *grin*

I made the mistake of starting to clean mine. I bought a plastic drop cloth to cover the engine, so any dirt coming from the underhood blanket wouldn't spoil my earlier work.

I sh*t you not, there is now about 2+ pounds of grease/oil/caked dirt on that plastic. And I'm still not done yet. I'm using my old driver's license to scrape at the caked on crap, and it just keeps falling off. It's f*ckin' NASTY. Aaaahhh!!

I hope it'll be worth it when I'm done. *grin*

I bought a new one, after that kinda grease damage the layer will now separate.

Spend $30 and order a new one from the dealer.

Its worth it.

Are those things really necessary? Rather, will anything BAD happen if i remove it?

The insulation on the hood is there to prevent premature wearing of the paint on the hood. My old 83 i took mine off and the hood was the first place for the paint to go. Right ontop of the engine too...

What exactly did you buy? The whole foam piece. A frigging mouse decided to eat part of my black cover. Foam is okay though but I would like to fix it and for $30 that is worth it.

Yo,

I'm not going to buy a new one! I'm gonna finish what I started!! That, and I've already used $30 worth of paper towels. *grin*

I didn't know it was that cheap. How hard was it to get all the plastic tabs/holders off? They look like one time deals.

Thanks for the FYI Sniper, just why didn't you tell me this BEFORE I started?! *wink*

They might be a bit more, but not much.

The peices are paennies to order new ones, but get a upholstry remover fork from a autoparts place and put it BEHIND the pad and pry.

you should have just taken it out then driven down to your local stereo shop and have them do it with dyno mat. its nice and shiny and it is sound proofing and also heat proofing. not much over $30 anyway.

Yo,

I finished, finally. My fingers are sore 'cause I ran out of Brake Kleen, and had to use Castrol Super Clean, which is like acid on skin.

Was it worth it? If you're an **** retentive freak like me, yeah, it's worth it. My engine bay looks like you just popped the hood on a Mazda lot in 1989. *grin*

Try cleaning 15 year old under spray crap that has turned yellow. Yuck. Man you have to scrub hard to get that **** off. I still have a lot to get if off, but it looks like brand new paint under it.
