Question Not much time...help needed.

hey all. ok the car is a 90 NA. yesterday i was driving and it was all good until i hear some metal dragging. i pull over and a small thin pipe (with respect to all the other pipes) is broken or something. on closer inspection it looks like one end is melted. apparently its the split air pipe and i drive home. i dont have much time to search on the forums or otherwise i would, but do i have to replace the whole main converter to replace the split air pipe? is it really THAT important? im just wondering what would happen if i drove it around for a little while since i dont really know what it does. well thanks for you help guys.

If the pipe nipple broke off the cat, it can be welded back on by an exhaust shop.

Driving around without the pipe connected will end up clogging the cats.

it wasnt the nipple or the piece thats welded to the cat but its the pipe that melted/broke. there is still a broken piece about an inch long connected to the cat and thats where it melted/broke, im guessing.

Either way, the pipe needs to be repaired or replaced.

i guess the main question is : do i need to replace the whole cat and SAP or can i just replace the pipe and have it welded on there? and maybe a ballpark figure of the price if you can...

I have no idea. I don't know where it broke, and you have not posted any pictures. It's highly likely that it can be fixed with 5 minutes of welding but all I can do is guess.

If the small diameter split air pipe broke from the cat you can use a small piece of rubber hose and connect opposite ends. Put wire loom around it to keep it from melting. Seemed to work for me.
