noob question about buying a T2

well im in the market for a car right now, since i sold my 96 GSR over the summer. im basically looking for a good autocross car that isnt a miata (something semi-practical). anyhow, i came across a classifieds ad for a 1987 turbo II, recently shipped from texas, with the motor currently out of the car. the ad also says he has all the parts. now get this. the price is $1450!!

so like, thats an awesome deal right? i mean, worst case scenario i have to fix a little body damage and maybe rebuild the motor.

i have some basic knowledge of piston engines, and very little of rotaries. would it be impossible for me to rebuild it myself? my uncle is a mechanic and he could help me if i got stuck, but i would have to do most of it myself. is this possible? if not, how much would it cost to have it rebuilt?

so what should i do here? im going to try and check it out this weekend. can you guys give me a little advise on this?

That's basically a pile of parts that may or may not have potential. The problem is that whenever you buy parts (or a car) that are not in working condition, it is very difficult to know what works and what doesn't unless you strip everything first and know what to look for. It is not necessarily bad to by a pile of parts, just as long as you have a basic idea what you are in for. What you describe is worth about $500. A good roller with a blown engine (or unknown engine) is worth about $800. A working 87-88 TII sells for about $2-3K, and a really nice one is about $4-5K. The 89-92 models are more expensive.

Rotary engines are very expensive to rebuild, as stated in the previous post. See the FAQ for buying tips.

If your mechanically inclined, I say you can rebuild it yourself, just buy a rebuild kit ($1,100) http://www.racingbeat.com/resultset....rtNumber=30014 , Atkin's Rebuild Video and a Hayes Manual, and a crapload of labor and you have a nice running and boosting T2
