Non turbo turboed?
Hi, I have a 1988 RX-7 and its naturally aspirated. Im looking to install a custom turbo kit but Im not sure on how much boost the rotary can handle. Ive heard in some places it can handle alot and from other ppl it cant handle much. Can someone please straighten this out for me. I want to run a T4 hopefully with at least 15lbs. but I dont want to blow up the motor. any help would be great

you know, i think topic may have actually been covered 10,000 times. Search for stuff like this before you post. As Icemark once said, the search is in the upper right hand corner.
And visit aaron cake's site (www.aaroncake.net) he has a guide

i think I remember aaroncake saying he was going to start banning people for giving advice on the NA --> Turbo that hadn't actually done it anyway.

look, people are just sick of talking about the same things that ussually start arguments between members anyway. Like they said, check Aaron's site, and search, the amount of boost it can handle depends on far to much for us to give a single answer, and most people who will answer will only give the amount they've done without blowing, not what the motor itself can handle.
If we're talking about just the motor itself, not including the fuel system requirements it's easier, but not still not just a single "here's the number answer"

As much as you want. It all depends on how much money you've got and how good it's tuned. I'm running 13psi on the stock turbo on my 180k mile 6 port block. It all depends on how much money you've got.

well if this help the fuel system consists of a walbro 255lph fuel pump, boost sensitive fuel regulator and 550cc injectors, but the motor internals are stock and i hope to keep them that way

i dont know about stock injectors, my plans are for 10psi one a streetport rebuild, i am upgrading to 550's on the secondaries and an FD fuel pump. definately get a nice FMIC to keep those temps down (detonation=the devils work). i used 2 stock topmount units to make mine. The way the oultes are setup i had to run 1 pipe up through the front. I will be using megasquirt to set this up cheap yet very effective. This project will, yes, be the **** but remember when you do this you cut off your high end boost capabilites in the process. Oh yeah and timing is going to be one of the bigger bitches when your running upwards of 10 psi cause of detonation. Again, tuning is KEY to this operation. Heres a pic of that wild FMIC
PS i will probrably end up just rewelding the front cores together with just a 2 tank setup for better flow

Read the FAQ at the top of this forum. It includes multiple links to various turbo-NA configurations.
Also, it links to my step by step semi-guide, as well as my original thread in the archives which contains an uncensored blow-by-blow walk through of my original install.

Ditch the stock injectors all together, or wire in an extra 'pair' as the above person mentioned (however, this is rather unneeded) Run at least the 550 in primary and then use whatever you feel for secondary (550 and up) I've got 550 primaries and 720 secondaries and I get around 11.4:1 @ 13psi with about -4% correction.
