noise from tranny

ok so i walk out to my car at work tonight to go and get me something to eat..hop and start it up..as soon as it starts this horrible loud whining noise is coming from the tranny..loud enough to where a girl that was working could here it through the building..well then it starts to die and i try to put it in geare to see if it goes away..well it doesnt..it just shuts off..so i start it back up and it does the same exact thing..although this time all i can smeel is the clutch burning..so i got it towed home..is my clutch like way past being dead or what?..thanks for any info
