The role of the seal is two fold:
1) it prevents clutch disk dust and foreign particles from contaminating the grease, and;
2) it prevents the grease from forcing out of the bearing under heat stress and centrifugal load and contaminating the organic clutch face (causing glazing, and eventually, a slipping clutch)
