Okay, I am making the plunge to rotary. Don't get me wrong the 944 is still in yon arsenal, I just feel the need to take while the taking is still good. It's a nice, and very clean '86. Brand new tires, injectors, sparkplug/wires, Cat, with stock exhaust. 97k miles, and runs very smoothly, Vin check came back great, and even has good bushings on the stick (everyone I have looked at needed new bushings; as does my 944.) It has no rust except on the stripping around the driver's side window, and that can be rectified in an afternoon. But it is sans turbo and has no LSD. Above that all I need are new belts and it's ready to drive! If necessary I can post some pics tonight.
Think this would be a good buy?


The over one I'm looking at needs a paintjob bad, and has the LSD but still no turbo. 120k, needs new cat and they are asking 1500.

i would buy the one for 1500 with the LSD in it. but thats just me you dont need turbo

Bullshit their is a guy in Laurel MD who is selling a mint 88 white t2 for 2k. Also he is one of the only guys in the area who some what works on rotarys and he is selling it to make room in his garage. Don't buy a POS NA and then try and do swaps when for a couple more dollars you can get what you want and trust me it will run a hell of alot better than a swap will. I am not bashing guys that have NA's I was just stating that if he wants a turbo don't buy a NA to save himself a couple of bucks to turn around and try and do a swap when he realizes that he has no power. Just do the numbers 97k, 120k he is looking at a rebuild as it is.

If he has a healthy engine he could go any where from 150k to 200k.

My 88 GTU blew it's engine at 102k.
My 88 SE has 155k and is still going.

A GXL is also a good platform in case you decide to jump to a TII.

My GTU is pretty much a light weight TII now.
It has the brakes and suspension and LSD already.

I do admit that a TII conversion isn't the cheapest but I know the history of the car and all things that have been replaced/gone wrong with it.

I like that more than buying a TII and hoping the engine will last.

I expect 2-3 years of problem free driving with my converion(once it runs lol).

 

i was driving an 86 base with 192k miles, sold it to a friend, he still drives it, and hard, not sunday grandma stuff.

i know for a few hundred more dollars more he could get a turbo, nothing wrong with it. But POS N/A, i dont mean to be an ***, but i love my N/A, i wouldnt trade it for a turbo with 350hp. but im in a minority, that is only inhabited by a handful of people, n/a guys are few and far between.

edit: the engine with 192k was making 85psi of compression on all rotor faces at 6500 feet elevation when i sold it, thats somewhere in the 95psi range at sea level, which is higher than a lot that are at 70-100k. i believe the record is 370k on an n/a engine, again, not grandma driving, hard driving, auto-x and all.

The turbo's might win in a quarter mile, but who's gonna win in the quarter MILLION mile?

 

lol its not even that im concerned with daily driver reliability. track/daily mountain driving reliability as well, my n/a never gets above 1/4 on the gauge, no matter how hard the driving. overall, im concerned with track/mountain pass reliability over daily driver reliability, but thats an added bonus

 

yeah I guess if you want "daily driver reliability" but why the hell would you want your "mountain pass race car" to be your means of transportation. The FC was never ment to be a daily driver. Not to mention now is coming up on 15 years old. If your FC is your daily driver you are not doing any type of racing because it would be way to hard on parts and you would be fixing more than driving.
