No storage bins

for weeks i have been reading about storage bins...from looking at my car, i was thinking you guys meant that small space behind the 2 seats, but when i was at the junkyard yesterday, i got a look inside a few 7's and saw actual bins with lids...my car doesnt have them.... could the carpet have been replaced without the lids for the storage thing, i dont actually wanna rip it up just to find nothing....btw every 7 i looked at yesterday had them even a cpl 1st gens,,,why is mine so weird. its an 86 fc na.

heh... i haven't run the storage bins since last year.
I bought some carpet, and molded carpet over the tranny tunnel and humps.

The seat reclines nearly 160 degrees back. Not many other cars can do this :P

If you lift up your carpet where the bins are supposed to be, you'll find two plywood lids. You can remove those and intstall the storage bins if you like. All of the 2 seater FCs had the places for the bins, some just didn't have the bins themselves.

My 87 base didnt have them until two weekends ago. Its a very simple project. Fold the carpet back up to the plastic thing, then take the plywood out. Fodl the carpet back down, and cut tthe opening s in the carpet where the bins go. drill the holes for the screws for the binds the rest of the way out(they are drilled halfway through the plastic). Then screw the bins in and you're done.

why would you want to? Some people get rid of their bins, some get rid of their seats.....you have it removed already..........and the carpet doesn't have holes...........leave it alone.........if you want bins hit me up though...lol

Only the 2 seater GXL came with storage bins in 86.

On 87 all models came with them except the 4 seaters and the base RX-7.

On 88 and later they were standard across the line on all 2 seaters.

well, it wouldnt be a bad spot for cleaning supplies and a quart of oil but other than that i dont see much use for them other than "accumulating junk" maybe a good spot for amps i guess, anyway, it was just something i noticed, cant beleive they put plywood in an rx7.....now thats rice LOL

my bins are gray and my interior blue. I got them for real cheap and just put blue carpet in place of the gray carpet. They match well enough. I like having them, It's a good place to store tools and not have them cluttered in the back. in my opinions, i'm glad i put them in. If i want to take them out, its about 5 minutes unscrewing each one.

Canadian models don't always follow the same rules as USA versions as well as it is common for people to add the bins on the 86 models.

But what is your production date???

My 90 doesn't have them either. I kind of like the clean/smooth look.

Hm, i've never heard of a series 5 without bins.

It looks fine without them, but I need a place for a battery, some tools, and a change of clothes

if I didn't have a speaxerbox on top of the holes where my bins should be, I would use them and love them. it's a great place for the little stuff I like to carry: CD wallet, camera, towel (gotta have a towel), maybe a jacket just in case (you can fit a good sized jacket or sweater in one bin). since giving up the bins I've had to get creative with sticking that stuff elsewhere, and it's not always easy.

I have found a great place to keep the quart of oil though: open your spare tire panel, and the quart sits right on top of that little chock bag inside the donut (if you still have these things, that is). its secure and away from the passenger area.

My 86' GXL had* storage bins before i went absolutly insane and turned a 17 year old perfectly good street driven GXL into a full blown weekend roadrace car and stripped the interior... Which will be fine as well.
