No Ordinary Love : Tek's rebuild

Theme song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WcWHZc8s2I&ob

Status:
Not running

Cause:
boost creep perhaps, turbo ate something, spit into the engine while under WOT, pop!
http://i51.tinypic.com/2czu3xf.jpg
No compression in first rotor.

Primary Goals:
Strip engine open, inspect damage, replace with new seals , total rebuild.
Remove emissions equipment, make block off plates from scratch. Paint parts.

Secondary Goal:
Building the hitachi ht-18 into a hybrid consisting of T04b compressor wheel and housing , with new wastegate actuator and ported wastegate. Thread https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/building-budget-hybrid-turbo-ebay-t04-parts-921510/

Optional goal #1:

Apply streetport job to the motor before assembly.

Optional goal #2:
Rebuilding S4 TII mechanical LSD and installing shims for more aggressive lock, Credit to forum member Nopistons! for the method used to do this.

I will be taking on the task of rebuilding my first motor. I am about 10 years heavy in the tuning game, alot of my mechanical experience and knowledge credit due to my old 240sx that I built over years of work and saving up. This rx7 has been my 3rd car, and have had my love and hate moments with it.

I will start with the negative. Buying someones project car has its criticism . I've owned this car since 12/07, and have come to do my own changes/mods to the car. I've come to see people online talk negative about my ownership of this car, typically "he bought it he didn't build it, it was better before he owned it, he doesn't drift it like he should" etc.. honestly, those who i have seen say this can go eat a d*ck. I have already been through every bolt on this car to feel comfortable to say I now own it and operate it very well, as well as continue it's awesome build up. My first car which was a 240sx, have spent years piecing up parts and saving for it, having seen how much time, money and dedication it takes to build a car from the ground up. This time around I did not have the patience to start from scratch, and this car already had all the things i liked, so it would be taking a short cut.

This is no ordinary love. I've enjoyed this car, i feel like it is a representation of what a modded street RX7 should be. Doesn't need 400hp like some other guys, she is low and kitted, but at the same time still has A/C , P/S and all creature comforts while still getting alot of attention for an aging car like the FC, while standing out from the rest, and above and beyond the beat up and poor examples roaming the streets.

The rebuild will be done at home. No garage roof to stay under, but have plenty of outside space to stretch. I have plenty of tools, an air compressor and various air tools. Borrowed an engine hoist and stand.
With an downloaded FSM, and various rebuild dvds, as well as online videos, the task shall be doable.

Rebuild

It is good to see you took the failures in stride and using it as an opportunity to improve the car. It may be a challenge working outside, but you need to keep everything as clean as possible. You don't want dirt or sand to get bearing or sealing surfaces.

I agree with you on the car ownership bit. You've obviously put work into it since buying the car. When you bought it, the car screamed project. It looks a lot better now. This comes from one of those "needs 400 hp street cars" guys.

put old rags or towels on the fenders and bumper or just remove them completely. Oil will stain the paint and it's impossible to remove without sanding and buffing.

I say get the street port since it's ether now or never or until your next engine rebuild. If it's an agresive street port it sounds sexy. Not as sexy as a bridgy or a p-port but better sounding next to hondas etc.

This should be fun...
My car was 100% stock when I got it, I can definitely see the merit of continuing a project rather than starting from scratch. The motor looks to be a usdm swap and compression isnt the greatest, I'm slowly assembling parts for am eventual rebuild and look forward to your progress.

When he says "tuning," Im pretty sure he doesn't mean sitting on a dyno with a laptop tuning cars. I'm pretty sure he means cutting springs, adding LED's, maybe bolting on coilovers, and making rims that don't fit, fit by mad tyte amounts of camber.

I been through that ugly project car progress stage *this pic selling suspension to buy new suspension etc* http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7228559_n.jpg
Once you get out of that stage and your car finally completed, you really never want to go that route again. I never want to beat on my car again. Well in 06-07, was getting tired of police profiling and worrying about theft as the 240sx grew in popularity I traded for a benz. Did my first track even at Irwindale in 04 from a little much unkown host who never really made a big name, back when all i had was a set of used coilovers, a slipping clutch and open diff, learned soo much from that event though. I can say that i actually enjoyed drifting open diff for the challenge. I can talk driving techniques but because no one has ever seen me or i dont post pics, people tend to think im talking out of my *** "oh whats he talking about? he dont post nothing proving it".

Yeah I love the visual aspects of modding, thats what attracts us in the first place!

random , but i recently fell in love with the FFR MK4 cobra replica, id love to build one someday when i can financially do so.

Speak for yourself. There's maybe 5% of FC's on this board that I think look good. And the first thing I did to my car certainly wasn't appearance based.

Wow Hyper, you're not a very popular guy, eh? I have to admit that your posts make me cringe aswell, but you are totally entitled to your oppinions. Anyways, best of luck on your rebuild, and don't let the haters keep you from posting.

Riz.

PS: Maybe keep the title of "Tuner" for people who actualy write ECU maps and dial in suspension for best racing conditions. ;-)

While I dislike all kitted FCs and slammed cars, I do like that you mount everything properly and paint to look complete. [The one mod that is visually appealing to me on your car is the LED S5 tails, if I weren't so lazy about getting my current project, and DD repairs done I'd probably be looking into that ]

Anyway! The engine rebuild should be fun! I did my first one on the floor of my parents' garage with just the Atkins DVD. Shouldn't be too hard. ^_^

Cleaning will take forever though.. And if you use Hylomar beware, it's the stickiest and hardest stuff to clean off I know of.. >_< [apply sparingly, it wont take much]

Yeah im fighting myself from replying back to the negative feedback, not really worth trying to change people's opinions, they will always think what they want.

Some preparation went into organizing and planning the route of attack.
I'm confident with my tools but one thing was that a week ago, my tool box looked like hell.. everything scattered everywhere and unnecessary tidbits taking up room in there where they shouldnt be. So took a day or 2 to organize everything.

borrowed engine hoist, stand.. battle armor placed out of way.

So how can I unbolt the a/c without having to evacuate my precious freeze12 refrigerant? Was planing to just move it out of the way to pull the motor.

Probably be the best time to paint my engine bay but I dont really care much for it. But I will be painting the engine parts

In the fsm is shows that you can just unbolt it from the block and wire it up off to the side and you should be able to pull the motor With out disconnecting any lines.

There are 4 bolts holding the compressor to the accessory bracket. Remove those and you can get the engine out while leaving everything attached. Don't let the compressor hang on that hose though.

The 4 bolts are all pointing towards the fender.

Yeah but there are 'tuner' shops that probably don't do any real engine tuning so I guess I don't mind that.

I did LOL when tek posted a set of coilovers that literally said 'dorifuto' on them. But other then that at least he has a car that looks like its been thoughtfully done. Even if I wouldn't do any of the mods on my car doesn't mean I can appreciate them.

so hypertek bought a car with a body kit. everyone else pretty much just bought the body kit and bolted it up (not like they custom made it)...... I don't see a problem unless he brags about how he did all the work him self.

anyways, glad you removed the body panels, the a/c will come off from the 4 bolts, you should remove the p/s so you can remove the engine easier. and remove your radiator and oil cooler cause it will be harder with the a/c system still attached
