no gas cap on 87 na will it run ok

nope. Fuel pump sucks fuel and pressurizes it into a line. The fuel cap just keeps fuel from escaping to the atmosphere. The fuel cap will flow air into the tank. Think of the problem that would occur when you sucked out gas and no air went into replace it. Your problems lies elsewear, such as a blown motor, or a really clogged cat.

The fuel tank is not pressurised and not having a cap will have absolutely no effect.

The missing gas cap with cause you to blow up if you throw a match out the window or ash your philly blunt.
