You can take the thermostat housing off of another S4 and swap it with the one you have. S5s had the radiator cap & overflow line on the radiator instead so I'm guessing someone swapped it on you.

Uh yes you need an overflow tank or the pressure in your water system will get too high and you'll likely have a seal or a hose fail somewhere and lose your coolant.

the engine doesn't have a Thermostat neck with an Over flow nipple?.
Does the radiator have an Overflow nipple?
You need some way of allowing the coolant to expand and go out of the cooling system. That is what the overflow is for.The coolant Expands goes out of the system to the overflow. When the Coolant Contracts,it Sucks the coolant out of the overflow and back into the system to Fill it back up(so to speak).
Think of it as "give and Take".Coolant system gives coolant the overflow bottle when Hot,then takes it back when cool.
If you don't have this system, then Every time to engine warms up,it will expel coolant. Then it will cool down, and the Level inside the System will be LOW.The buzzer will go off(if you have a working warning system).
This is gonna mean repetitive Filling of the cooling system, and If you don't refill it,it will result in Overheating and Blowing your engine.
So,all in all.,Get a Nipple,and bottle in the system,you need it.
