Exclamation no acceleration

i just bought a 1989 gt, its got 80,000 and compression is good, had a good air filter, plugs but it just doesnt want to rev up, it was sittin for a wile like about a year before i got it, when i hit the gas it just revs way to slow and it wont even hit 8,000 rpm it just sort of sits at 7. what could be wrong i was thinking maybe a clogged cat. not sure thanks for the time, karl

I am thinking GTU?.. Well you check out your cats. And also replace air filter with a nice new one... maybe your currnet one got wet and isn't alowing enough flow?

Drain the gas from the tank if you have mixed stale and new gas,(there is a drain plug), clean the fuel pump filter sock, and change fuel filter with OEM Mazda filter. Next, have the injectors cleaned. these folks have a great rep. http://www.cruzinperformance.com/fuelinj.html

After a year the gas will varnish up and restrict your fuel system. Your problem right now is most likely the fuel system.

The VDI may not be opening correctly.

Does the engine rev up fine when its not under load. I mean does it rev when you aren't trying to put it in gear and go.

If so, I would see if the VDI is opening correctly, cause if its not it'll be a dog.
