Question Newby needs answers!

Hi all - into my second day of RX ownership and could do with a little 'local knowledge'. My car was an Ebay purchase and there are no handbooks/manuals with it.

Firstly - my wipers only work on slow speed and don't park (rear does not work) seller says it's common and likely to be the motor (front). Is this right?

Secondly - is the power steering speed sensitive? (very light when parking).

Thirdly - will a later model Air con pump fit (3rd gen)?

Finally - apart from fuel economy, what do I need to know?!

Thanks guys

Ian

2. Either speed sensitive or rpm sensitive. The better models get speed sensitive.

4.
  • Do your maintenance. The FAQ links to the FSM (free) or you can get a Haynes manual at an auto store. If you don't know the history, a 60,000 mile tune-up is recommended.
  • Engine will blow if overheated too long. Use OEM thermostats only (from a Mazda dealer), pull over immediately if temp gauge reaches 7/8 (86-88, 1/4 is normal) or a little above half (89-92, 1/2 is normal).
  • Search "fuel pulsation dampener". Check yours. Major fire hazard.
  • Handling upgrades: search "suspension bushings", "DTSS", "shocks", "springs"
  • Power upgrades: search "cai", "catalytic converter", "cat back", "cone intake"
  • This forum's FAQ and search tool will tell you anything else you want to know.

Read the posts on these forums to learn about the rotary engine. There are differences in their maintenance from that of piston cars. Sensitivity to overheating has already been mentioned. Oil changes are another. The rotary injects small amounts of crankcase oil into the combustion chamber to lubricate the internal seals. About a quart over 2500-3000 miles, depending on how much you put your foot into it. So, you want to use high quality oil and no oil additives. Change the oil and the oil filter at least every 3000 miles.
