hi,
i have just got a 1989 rx7, i am loving it!!! but there is some things that i need to know...

1st:
i get a very strong smell of petrol! when driving even more so when i have been giving her some, any ideas???

2nd:
the gear stick and trans tunnel get very warm/hot after about 30mins yet again after a good drive puting the power dowm.

3rd:
i know that these cars get the old rust bug! where are the places i should be looking?, had a quick look under her today but didnt know if there is main places there they go, there is some surface rust on rear arches.

4th:
i wanna change the gearbox oil, 1 to see if it helps with the heat and 2 so i know its all gd, anyone got any advice on doing this, i.e. where to fill up from???

5th:
it has 135,000 on the clock so getting on, i would like to keep her, even tho the fuel bill is taking all my moneys, so i was thinking new engine, asi like to be diffrent.... i was looking at the 20B engine, is this poss??? and any advice on fitting it or a diff engine to go for.

Hi, glad you like it, but next time please search. You're lucky I'm having a slow day at work, so I'll be nice and answer most of them for you

I'm going to take a guess that it's most likely your pulsation dampener. Get that changed ASAP. (you're most likely leaking fuel. Leaking fuel + hot rotary = engine fire)

Pretty normal for a 2nd gen.

Check wheel wells, and check for rust underneath the bins (the bucket things behind the front seats). By underneath, i mean take the bins out.

Changing the gearbox oil will probably help with the heat. As for the location i believe it's right on the bottom of the tranny on the left (driver's) side... but don't trust me on that...

Sigh...yes 20b's are possible, but you better have deeeeeep pockets. From what you said above, most of your money is going towards gas (I'm assuming you're still a student, right?). Personally, i'd just get the car's stock engine rebuilt with a streetport. If you have the money, you can always turbo it as well (however, it's usually wiser just to buy a Turbo II if you're going that route).

thanks for the help, been on other rx7 forums before i found this one, and no help at all.
im not a student but not on great moneys. and with petrol going up by the day in the uk.

my plan is to see if this body is good on this one and if so spend moneys on it as good ones are hard to find, from wat i have seen.
