Newbie in 2nd generation (sorry :-))
Hi from barcelona. I own a fantastic FD3s, but I'm a noob in 2nd generation questions.
A good friend of mine has recently bought a RX7 FC3s turbo II (1991), and both of us don't know where to begin with... These cars are really hard to find here, in Spain.
I've already searched in the 2nd generation FAQ and archives, but I've not found an easy to follow upgrade guide, sorry!!!
The question is that we're now doing all the maintenance tasks (hoses, wires, cooling, etc, etc) It's in a very nice shape anyway!!! But the question is that we don't know how to performance it! I know the upgrade order in the 3rd generation, and I know at which point you need a new ecu, etc, etc. Do you have any link for this question?
For example, is it dangerous running a total-free exhaust? At which point in the upgrade order do you need new ECU or new fuel-pump and injectors? Is there any bad stock point like in the FD (small radiator, bad ast, too small ic, etc...)
Thanks guys, it's like beginning again, heheheeh...

hey there, welcome to the 2nd gen section.
The MOST important thing with these is maintainence. If you are unsure of the age/condition of vac lines and fluids, do a 60k tune up.
From my experience with T2s, you should upgrade the fuel pump, secondary injectors and ECU while running a free flowing exhaust (especially 3"). You don't want to push the boost on these cars while starving the motor of fuel.
Digital Tuning Inc makes a nice flashed ecu for s4's. But they don't have the S5 ECU available yet.
So you either looking at SAFC or standalone.
If you can afford it, the ECU is probobly the WORST aspect of the T2. If you replace JUST the ECU (with a standalone) you'll have better gas milage and more power, when properly tuned.
The stock radiator and oil coolers are pretty tough. The intercooler is a giant piece of crap. I beleive it's actually coined the name 'inter-heater'.
Get an after market boost gauge.
Good luck, Keep us informed!

Houhouhou... that's what I was thinking that I was going to hear. Thanks very much! So full-open exhaust = new ECU. That's a very important point... Which are the mods we can do with stock ecu? intake - catback & IC maybe?
Don't worry, we're installing a boost gauge very soon!!!

Haltech is the most popular. I am pretty happy with the Motec.
Full exhaust is just a bad idea on stock ECU. How will the 20 year old ECU compensate for more boost? And the wire harness is usually in pretty bad shape.
Inake and cat-back are nice mods for a stock 7.
IC is a GREAT one. You could then get an FD Upper Intake manifold.
Maybe upgrade the coils, and fuel pump. For the price of a Walbro, you really can't go wrong.
Upgrade the oil lines (they always leak) maybe do a few oil mods, relocate the filter, larger filter...
Suspension upgrade,
Injecotrs and fuel rail upgrade,
Methanol injection...
By that point, you'll be dying for more boost, and all you'll really need is the standalone, turbo and manifold.

Just one more ultra-fast question:
Can you upgrade Intercooler with stock ECU?
The first things we want to do before upgrading injectors and ECU are:
-Intake
-Catback
-Bonez hi-flow cat
-IC
Is this too risky??

Understand me... Here we dont have good electronic tuners, so by the moment we're very interested in knowing which are the limits on the stock ecu. Anybody??

As long as all vac lines are reconnected, it should be fine.
The other mods you listed sound fine. I would include an upgraded fuel pump as well.
If you can get your hands on a wideband AF gauge, you'll have a much better idea how the motor is doing. You dont have to have it hooked up at all times, but after each mod, do a run with the wideband hooked up so you can see the AFR for yourself.

i just got back from madrid, and didn't see one rx7 in 7 months.
anyway, check out megasquirt for an ecu if you like electronics and playing around with stuff, otherwise i'd recommend haltec.

Victor,
Since you have a 3rd generation Rx7 (FD), you should be asking in the 3rd gen. TECH section, since this is the 2nd generation TECH section...
The FD and the FC are very, very different. Your FD and your friends FC will require different modifications while you're upgrading.
Read THIS for more information about upgrading your friends FC: http://fc3spro.com/TECH/FM2W/power.htm

Hey guys, don't worry, my FD is still with me, and I hope this will be a very long relationship. When I say "we want to...", I'm talking about me and my friend, cos we're doing things together in his FC. But that's not my car. His English is not very good so he prefers that I am the one writing, hehehe...
In my FD I'm already running pettit unlimited ecu, apexi intake, greddy titanium catback, Bonez hi-flow cat, megan racing downpipe, hks ssqv bov, greddy profec-B and some other nice stuff But as I told you, we knew nothing about the FC turbo II.
Now, thanks to you, we've a clear way to do.
