newb needs help, plz engine swap 13bt s4 to s5 swap
Ok, so I bought a 1988 turbo II for 500 buck with a BAD ENGINE. I got a crate engine from a s5 and there are some differences I am having trouble with. The 88 had an external vacuum driven device on the exhaust manifold and was missing several components of the manifolds side of the motor (acv valve?) and now i have a couple extra wires hanging down. Would it just be easier to use the 88's turbo, exhaust manifold and intake manifold? Or can i make the newer s5 one work somehow? Also I plan on tuning this motor and I was wondering if I can use the ap engineering power fc unit for the 89 motor or does it not work with the 88 wiring setup. If I need to get an 89 wiring harness and ecu I can do that too. I just need help figuring this out... Im not even sure the engine on the old setup was blown... it didnt accelerate well, died at idle and lit up the catalytic converters like a lightbulb. I stripped the exhaust and ran straightpipe and removed the smog pump... also very oddly (and to my dislike) the fuel pump has a toggle switch under the dashboard and I dont know why. I would like to rewire the fuel pump the way it is supposed to be but I dont understand chiltons wiring diagram any better than I can read egyptian hieroglyphs. Any help would be appreciated greatly. I plan on building the car to about 325rwhp eventually so keep that in mind with any suggestions. Thank you
If you don't want to change over the wiring, then just use the S5 block and the S4 external stuff....
where did you find a "crate" S5 motor? or do you mean a rebuild?

I bought it at a local engine importer.. got a pretty good deal too...$725 out the door for a s5 13bt long block....so I should wswap all the engine components from my s4 over to the s5? Wont I get more hp out of the s5 turbo and manifold?
well really with a few minor mods like porting the wastegate and adding a manual boost controller - you can see as much out of the S4 stuff as you do with the S5
Even without the mentioned mods I doubt whether the difference in power is actually worth the headache of switching all that over along with assoctiated wiring etc. You're better off to just use the S5 block with S4 externals and crank up the boost a smidge.
edit: but before you think about putting that motor in I would check the compression out real good.........

Search around the forums and see how many people have gotten "running" engines out of "japanese rx-7s" from importers.
The majority of jspec engines are low mileage, abused, and in need of rebuilds.
So... before you get yourself flamed, just understand that there are hundreds of members on here who have multiple years of experience with these cars, these engines (including japanese 13bs
) and when they tell you that you should check the compression (i agree with this), you should check the compression.
In the rare case that you have gotten a 100% usable engine, congrats! Otherwise you should check it over while you may still be under whatever importer you used's warranty. Even better, find a local rotorhead and buy him a case of beer to help you inspect it.

Is so easy 2 do and there is so many threads on this subject that is just crazy,we have 2 come up with a sticky so people stop asking the same question every hour or so.Im not trying 2 be a dick but it gets old all the info is in here please search a little.
Put the engine on the car.
Get a set of block off plates and get rid of all the emissions.
You can block the S5 oil metering pump or use a S4 front cover and oil metering pump.
Use the S4 turbo TPS,Water temp sensor,Coolant temp sensor, flow meter.map sensor and ecu.
Keep the S5 turbo injectors unplug your resistor pack, cut off you resistor pack plug and joint all five wires together and magic just happen now you are running HI injectors on your S4 car.
Use your S4 harness,if the car was a factory turbo you only need 2 swap some plugs from the S5 harness like you want 2 use the S5 injectors clips and water temp plug.If the car was a NA you have 2 redo your alternator wiring and ad the knock box(not needed)
The car should start and run fine at this point. Is up 2 you 2 use the knock box.

There is a 99% chance that your CRATE engine is toast. Before you do anything inspect the engine, take the exhaust and intake manifolds off and inspect your seals, spark plugs and cooling sistem.
I got a S5 turbo short block with S4 turbo front cover in a S4 turbo car. I kept all the S4 externals. But for some reason it's not running right. The CAS is all the way retarded for the timing to set.
I would love a very detailed write up on this kind of swap. All the write ups I have seen are basically S5 turbo to NA.
Or maybe because S5 Tii to S4 Tii is so basic that's why there isn't a detailed write up.

This is very true....you're better off using that 2k on a engine rebuild, but I digress. This thread has been revived after 4 years of slumber, bet he doesn't even have the engine anymore or the car for that matter.
Sorry for continuing this thread revive...it might as well be closed/locked
its easiest to just do a s4 t2..the turbo manifold from a s5 will bolt right on to a s4. but putting an s5 into an s4 is a giant pain in the *** nothing will match up wiring wise at all not to mention u have a turbo 2 already rebuild it take the turbo mani and such off the s5 then i would trade your s5 engine for an s4 and be done with it. no point in trying to put a triangle in to a square hole.
I also could really use some more detailed info on this swap. For the life of me I can only find series 5 motors for sale from japan right now. I dont really want to do this swap but as far as I can find right now its gonna cost me an extra 400$ for a series 4. I got one about 7 years ago for under/around 1100$ shipped to me in NH and that seems to not exist anymore as an option. I have all my ser4 externals still in a box so a series 5 is lookin likely.
I also searched like a **** and coulndt find sh%t on that specific swap. Whats so bad about swapping the externals and injector clips? Doesnt sound like that much of a pita to me.?.

You will be replacing the front cover and converting to S4 OMP, which is what I would say the "hardest" part. Keep all s4 electronics mounted to the S5 keg and possibly s5 intake manifolds if you want.

Yo im in the process to ive been searching like crazy and the best scenario i have come up with is if you have the time shop around until you can find an S4 TII cuz then that would make all the easier...trust me i have looked at every possible thread on TII S5 to N/A S4 swaps and this is what io have come up with so far. i wanna get it right he first time... hopefully

hit me up if you find some other way though i would love to slap an S5 on my 88 GXL
