New TII owner Q's
New TII owner Q's
Hiya everyone, just gots me a shiny TII! First off i'm curious as to what I should begin with.
I'm aiming for a streetable 280-320hp without resorting to porting.
Let me know if this seems appropriate: (In order too!)
1991 TII
1. Turbo Timer
2. Boost gauge
3. Water temp gauge
4. Some other gauge?
5. MSD ignition (mostly for the rev limiter, or would an all new comp do that? haltek etc...)
6. Fuel pump (does it need to be upgraded? at what stage?)
7. Secondaries upgrade
8. FCD
9. Downpipe+high flow cat+cat back
10. Intake (round the same time as 9)
11. AFC (would a haltek do this too?)
12. FMIC, preferably a used one, not one of those 1k+, im poor
13. Haltek
am i missing something? What should I do other than change plugs, belts, oils, and filters to begin with? What should my timing be set at for SAFE running? Anything to check? How high should the factory boost gauge go (bottom to top, bottom to mid?). What does the factory temp gauge look like when normally running (this thing appears to heat up quicker than my 83 GSL).
TIA, if i have more which I will i'll ask then
BTW-compared to my 83, analogy time:
83 is to snail as
TII is to something that eats snails.
Josepi!

That's alot of horsepower to sqeeze out of a T2. I am not sure it is possible without maybe a turbo upgrade. Also it might be advisable to get an air/fuel ratio gauge as well as an exhuast gas temp gauge, and maybe even a fuel pressur gauge.
This topic came up about 3 weeks ago. Do a search, I know for a fact that a member named ReTed made some comments on that thread so search for his username in the search parameters. 300 rwhp is possible.
Remove some weight...
...89-91s are 3k lbs, while the 87-88s are 2800. You have the advantage of a better intake manifold, turbo, and some other misc things. Do the ATF trick, and make sure the cooling system is in GREAT shape, b/c overheating will **** ya up. I just replaced my thermo, and took out my oil cooler and radiator for cleaning. I also cut out some of the front bumper, made a grill mesh, and took out the air condenser (A/C) for better radiator flow. As was said above, DEFINATELY get a high quality A/F guage, as well as an EGT guage to monitor lean/richness. You don't want a T2 to run over 900 on the EGT. Also, I'd advise bumpin the dp/mp/catback, and FCD to one of your first upgrades. Alot of these older cars have clogged cats, and taking 'em all off reduces strain on the engine, can lower temperatures, and will give you a huge amount of power. Just make sure you're running the right fuel mixture =)... hope it helps

EGT gauge, does that run off a O2 sensor?
Soo would I need an aftermarket O2 sensor, then gauges? The factory cd/tape deck is gone, so now I have a nifty place for the gauges!

Josepi,
Some of the rx7 online stores have staged upgrades that make this a no-brainer. I think rx7.com is one of them.
Your correct gagues should be the first mods so you can monitor your engine for improper air/fuel or other destructive events.
The most common are air/fuel, exhaust temp., coolant temp, and boost.
Your list is right on. Perf. exhaust, perf. catalytic converter, perf. intake, cold air box, and fresh air headlight scoop are the most common first mods. With those you will be running slightly above stock boost so you might want to look at ways to controle boost pressure/spikes.
You might want to put the FMIC in stage 3 along with the fuel injectors, fuel rails, fuel pump, ECU (Haltek).
I was considering an upgraded radiator as well to compensate for the FMIC reducing air flow to the OEM radiator. I think you might have to move the radiator anyway for the FMIC.
The main thing is keeping the Air/Fuel ratio and boost within control when making all that extra horsepower so you're engine won't break.
