New Rx-7 owner

I just bought my first tuner car, a 1990 rx-7 convertible. Well i have a number of problems. Firsthand My gauges arent working 7.5 volt fuse is blown and i wondered why which lead me to my second problem. I look under to see the wirings i seen a lot of splicing, a lot of stray wires, and a whole lot of electrician's tape. I have a strange feeling that im going to have to rewire the whole thing. Now i start it and from the moment i start it to the moment i kill the engine there is a constant buzzing. Thats driving me crazy but i know something is wrong.
I also got a aftermarket exhaust from the cat back i occasionally get popping while idling but its not detonation.

As for work done on it the previous owner installed a body kit on it exhaust.

I have brand new bushings coming because i heard that 2 gens used plastic bushings and if thats true, then ill be willing to bet my last wrench on the fact some if not all of them are cracked. In response to that i ordered a hypermax 2 bushing kit.

If theres someone who is familiar with the electrical system on an rx-7 plz help me out!! thanks

popping sound

im new to rotary and cars in general so theres a really good chance im wrong
and dont know what im talking about.
but i had the same problem on my old integra,
it was because the spark plugs were bad causing it to misfire,
after i changed the spark plugs the popping stopped.
maybe its the same on rotaries?

.....is it even possible for rotaries to misfire

Backfires are going to be music to your ears. (Maybe I'm just deafened by my car.) You may have some backfires when your car is warming up (~10-20 minutes), but after that, you shouldn't have any. You may get the occasional backfire during shifts if you wait too long between gears. (That's what happens when you have bad synchros, you have to f'in wait to shift.) I had an ***-ton of electrical-tape-wiring in my car when I got it. I've pulled the stereo, ripped (delicately) plastic panels off and snipped wires like you wouldn't believe. The idiot that had this car before me thought going to cheap route with stereo installation was the way to go. She's my rolling restoration project. Also, I'll say it before anyone else does: compression test. Check out the FAQ for links to the FSM (Factory Shop Manual) online and download ALL the PDFs. The FSM is the Bible of the RX-7. The compression test just gives you an idea of how the car's apex seals are, well, sealing. Too low of numbers and, since this is a tuner car, you should start with a rebuild and go from there. Just my 2.5 cents.

And do remember (as I have a very hard time remembering), these are not young cars. My car is even older than yours ('86), so you may have to replace all the hoses under the hood and rubber brake lines. (Which reminds me...)

backfires are cool. People who dont like them should go back to a wussy piston engine..

Lack of coolant is causing the buzzer to go off. This fits in with your latest thread.

for the back fire its normal for an rx7 to do that, thats just the way rotarys are built so dont wory about the back fire but everything else get that taking care of for the buzzing you may have a leak so try adding some coolant to your radiator and then see if you have a leak somewhere

I hated how I'm having to undo things that should have never been done. TAKE CARE OF THE IMPORTANT STUFF FIRST! The guy that had this car before me didn't really think that rear bearings and brake rotors were above a stereo system with regards to priority. Moron. Anyway, now I have Powerslot rotors and Hawk HPS pads and I'm loving the combo. Not to mention everything else that I've been doing with this car.

ok yalls i started to fix it up i had several problems my most recent being the electrical system. im fixing it. i managed to service my gauges and they now work (cept the battery gauge) and have most of the interior back in place. i had a coolant problem but it is now rectified by burping the air from the system but i have to go back into the cooling system >.< to make a gasket for the thermostat because the gasket is leaking. ill be doing that tonight. as for it the popping i've been hearing in the exhaust is actually the air going from a narrow to wide pipes that are in the back.
