'87 RX-7 turbo II the turbo isn't in it, this is my second car mainly got it cause its my 1st died, and the 87 was my first dream car.

the problem
I bought it for $1200 knowing it needed some work, it was originally automatic and had a manual trans put in by trailer park Bob. Other than the miss match assembly that you see when looking at under the car, the tranny is on its last legs I got a new tranny and its going to cost me 300-700 to have some one put it in, 19 and dont know a lot about cars can I do it my self fairly well?

 

If you're mechanically adept, yes, you can do it. However, if you don't work on cars much, that may be a big first task. Download the FSM or buy a Haynes manual, read through the transmission section and see if you think you can do it.

 

Taking the trans out is a great project to learn on, but it will be far easier if you have some friends to help.

How do you know that the trans is on the way out?

 

The Haynes manual, how good is it for the 7? I know I changed the head gasket on my Passat with the help of the Haynes.

But wankels are.. wankels.

 

The transmission is from a ford f150, no wankel specific craziness involved.

That being said, removing the trans is a job, but putting one in is quite possibly the biggest pita on these cars. Not for the faint if heart and certainly not without the help of a friend, or better yet, two. Otherwise you will be wishing you'd just paid the money.

 

I bought a Haynes manual, but I have only found it useful when i don't have access to the forums. D/L a copy of the FSM, its free and also useful.

 

I had a buyers inspection done on the car after i got it they said that the Tranny was on its way out, like I said love them and i would like to get to know my car so I'm not worried about tackling a project

 

Another dumb question buying a ratchet set cause mine is....every, is it Metric or not

 

I would have to say save up some money because Im pretty sure there might be other things wrong with it.

And it is a fairly simple job if you follow a manual or have someone with you that has done stuff like this before.

lucky for me, I have a close friend who is a heavy experienced mechanic that walks with me with everything I do. and teaches me all the tricks

 

Everything on the car should be metric.
