New here and Would like some help?

Hey,
I have been reading many forums and other sites on RX-7's and i think i have fallen in love with the car the FC style. Any how due to some genius running a red light my car was totaled so I'm tired of making payments and wanted to buy something out right. I found a RX-7 while car hunting and I've saved up enough for this one. I would like to know if its worth it?

The Guy says it just needs a Clutch... How much do those cost?(typically)

I just got an e-mail from the guy selling it. Its an SE...
I know that there is a big deal on the 4 bolt and 5 bolt stuff. I have tried a couple searches but didn't find what the main differences were?

He only wants $675. It looks in decent shape from the pictures is it worth making the appointment to go look at it? or am i better off saving for around 4 months and getting something that is like $3000 it seems hard to find a decent one here for under that.

Here is a link: http://www.sellmycar.com/usedcar.aspx?adid=80957

any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

wow excellent price, i believe it's 5 lug since it has the rear wiper and adjustable steering column, that would be atleast a gxl i believe.
.it looks very clean from the pic. too bad we can't see the interior. also get a compression check before buying.

one thing you gotta understand about rx7's is you might be buying it out right but it could possibly cost you several hundred dollars a month to fix things that go wrong. it's a 20 year old car so it's gonna need alot of TLC, probably new brake pads, plugs, wires, and new fluids right away . and at 150k miles the motor could go at anytime so be prepared to shell out a couple thousand if that happens. otherwise welcome to the community.

You can get a cheapy clutch that is basically the same as one from a b2000 for $100 or so. Include flywheel machining in there and you can have it running for less, i'd buy a spec or act though if you're doing spirited driving.

Read aaron cake's site on how to buy an rx-7 for more info, i think there is a link to it in the faq.

I doubt the engine will go just at any time, if taken care of NAs can last a long time.

Also with a single original owner i'm sure the car has been decently taken care of.

Also in 88 i think they started making alot of that stuff standard.

thanks for all your help guys i appreciate it.
Im going to probably check it out this weekend.

As for the compression check on Arron cake's site he talks about the best way is to take it to a mazda dealer well kinda of hard if i can't drive the thing. As for the poor mans test? Is that enough? Or where can i get a gauge to test it?

Other than that im not too concerned with some TLC and repairs i live like 5 mins from work so if it did go down i can walk to work if need be until i can make the repairs.

Thanks again guys

Oh yeah and i tend to be a spirited driver so it would be better to go with a spec or act.

ACT all the way!!

I have heard/experienced some horror stories about spec clutches, but never any from FC owners. so maybe they are ok in FC's? I have an ACT clutch and I friggan love it tho.

my $.02

yeah thats a rough one getting it compression tested without being able to move it. i'd just be wary then, it could be really good, it could be really bad. thinking about it though i'm kinda worried since the price is so cheap. that cars still worth 1200-1500. i paid 1800 for mine with a dead clutch and the bodies not half as nice looking. if anything it's a hell of a deal just for a body like that. either way i think it'll be a good learning experience

Well thats the problem. Can't move the car without a working clutch. and hey let me put the car on a trailer and take it to a nearby shop for a compression test probably wouldn't sit well LOL.
But Ive looked all over the FAQ's and even in the standard options under the 88 seems it didn't even come with ABS but are the major differences Options or things really important to the point that if i want to upgrade to lets say a turbo 2 and some other minor performance parts in the sometime kind of near future. Other than a 4 pt break system which i could see as useful and not so easy to change.

Ive tried searching the entire forum under 4 bolt vs 5 bolt... 4 lug vs 5 lug.... difference between 4 bolt and 5 bolt... last but not least the variation of bolt the ominous LUG.

Other than that for less than $1000 seems like a good start for a learning experience...
