New Guy on the block

Within a month or so I will be buying a 87 Base model RX-7 from a fellow member (Phu5ion). Even though I am a newb to this site I am not a newb to forums (forums.maxima.org) He basically told me all of the issues and it sounded worth the troubles for the cost he want.

I have wanted any 2dr sport car, RWD, and manual for the past 6 months or so. I was natuarally gonna get a 240sx because I am a nissan fanatic. But since the fast and the furious the prices jumped from like 1k to like 3k. WTF!!! I have a 90 maxima right now and once I get the RX I will be missing the low end torque.

Newb Question Alert !!!!

1. Is there any way to convert from a 4 lug to a 5 lug?
2. Where are some good sites to find a JDM engine (I may convert to turbo or make one up this summer.)
3. How much hp can these trannies hold (I've been through 2 on my max (auto) and I am working on my third)
4. There is a tranny whine but I am guessing either the input shaft bearing or throwout bearing. anyone else experience this.
5. I heard about flooding so can someone elaborate on this isubjext as I am clueless to rotories.

Sorry about the questions but I prefer to hear personal experience as search the web from various site often leave contradictions and such.

Welcome to the club... lots of people will tell you to search but I will help.

1. Yes
2. I wouldn't reccomend a JDM engine because I've seen many posts like "JDM engine has low compression", "JDM engine blown at 400miles" etc. I'd reccomend a rebuild and turbo your existing NA motor. Or you could do a Turbo II swap.
3. NA trannies are weak from what Ive heard, but Turbo IIs are stronger. But with Turbo II tranny, the driveshaft and differential must be swapped too.
4. When does the whine occur? Clutch in while in neutral? Clutch out while in neutral? Any particular gear while driving? All gears?
5. Flooding occurs when the engine is shut off before it has enough time to warm up. Never start the car up, drive 5 feet, then shut it off. If a situation arises when you may HAVE to, rev the engine up to about 3.5K with as little gas as possible and shut it off while on the decel. If it does flood, pull the EGI Comp fuse and turn the engine over with the gas to the floor for about 10 secs. Put EGI Comp fuse back in, and if its not severly flooded, it should start right up with some smoking. Flooding can also occur if you have leaking injectors, but thats a bit different.

The search button and archive will realy help you here.

1. Is there any way to convert from a 4 lug to a 5 lug?
Yes you need the suspention camber assembly fro ma 5 lug car.

2. Where are some good sites to find a JDM engine (I may convert to turbo or make one up this summer.)
Why do you want JDM? They are exsactly the same and ushaly a big gamble to buy one that is in good working condition. Just buy a USDM one or visit www.1300cc.com

3. How much hp can these trannies hold (I've been through 2 on my max (auto) and I am working on my third)
Not sure but I have heard of people runing 375BHP on TII trannys. The NA tranny your pushing 250BHP

4. There is a tranny whine but I am guessing either the input shaft bearing or throwout bearing. anyone else experience this.
Probly throwout baring

5. I heard about flooding so can someone elaborate on this isubjext as I am clueless to rotories.

fc3s.org
rx7.com
this site all have writeups on unflooding procedures.

Welcome to the board... From one 3rd gen maxima owner to another....good choice on the 7! I was looking at staying in the nissan family too but I just had to get my hands on a rotary motor! Good luck with the Rx... should be a fun project if you get it for a decent price.

Well I got all summer to learn a rotary so that is what I will do. I was gonna rebuild my max and work on it but I saw this car for sale and jumped on it. Plus the thing with me blowing two trannies at stock HP was kinda hurting the pockets.

I purchased 2 J-spec motors/trannies from a place in VA called japanstarmotor.com

I had no intent of using the motors as a drop in replacement. I got an extremely good deal on both motors ($1000 shipped to my door) for both!

The company stated that the second motor had low compression. I bought them both regardless, because i was planning to use them for parts.

The first motor, when cracked open, was perfect. It looked as if it was freshly rebuilt, and the housings and seals were perfect. The side seals even stuck to the intermediate plate when i pulled the front rotor. Every part was usable on the motor.

I could've gotten away with dropping this motor in as is, but i would've never felt confident that the motor would last.

So, if you plan to run a J-Spec motor, make sure you get accurate compression tests done to the motor before buying, and if possible, look at the motor in person. I may have been lucky, but who says the next person will or wont.

Good luck
-Justin

3rd gen maxima auto's are not for the spirited drivers. I race on the highway sometimes so that might be it. I don't neutral drop or anything. I don't try to take off fast from a stop nor do I burn out. Those autos just suck.

Yo VG,

Yes, this car does flood every once in a while. Like everyone well will tell you, make sure the engine gets up to normal operating temps before turning the engine off.

As you start browsing around here definately check out the FAQ at the top of this forum section, and AaronCake has lots of good infomation on his site (http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/). There are also more links in the FAQ if i remember correctly.

About import engines, this guy knows a guy with a shop that has been importing 13BT's for a little while now (http://www.nopistons.com/forums/inde...howtopic=44149). Doesn't have any currently, but definately keep your eye on it.
