New to FC
Hi, I've had an FB for about a year now, and saw a deal I couldn't refuse in the paper the other day.
1987 RX7 - $900
(Phone Number)
So, I called the lady up, and asked her about the car. She said that it's her husband's car, and she knows almost nothing about it, other than it's the base model, and it still runs like new (according to her).
I pretty much know what to look for mechanically, but I need some help.
I'm assuming that even FCs are getting rusty. Where are some places to look for rust on these ones?
Also, I'm getting used to all the 'creature comforts' my FB provides (even if I've ripped most of the stuff out!)
What kind of 'stuff' does the base model have? I'm assuming it has manual windows (thank god), no AC, and no power steering? Am I right, also, in assuming that there are storage bins rather than backseats in FCs, as well as a sunroof?
And, finally, is there anything weird I should look out for, that a first gen owner wouldn't think about?
Thanks for all your help.
JJ

You can look for the same things really you'd look for with your first gen in regards to motor functionality. Read the faq, particularily aaron cakes guide on buying a used FC, its awesome reference.
Flooding, due to bad injectors most of the time is the most comon problem with this car thats different than yours. Rust is comon in the wheel well rim, underneath the passenger and drivers side frame as well. It can get so bad that there will be holes in the frame, just watch out for that.

would've been changed aftermarket
the pods you can buy from mazda so it's a common swap specially if you're like me and have a roll cage

fc's don't come with powersteering, a/c, and back seats, atleast not here in america. Anyways, base models didn't come with either rear seats or storage bins, instead theres some piece of wood over the bin holes. I first bought an 85 rx7 gs and now i bought an 88 turbo II, i certainly love fuel injection compared to carbs, but the fb can be as fun as the turbo II (i wouldn't take the t2 down a gravel road, but the fb....sideways). good luck.

Well, I read the ad wrong. It's an 88 (although, what difference that makes, I don't know).
It's in what I would call good condition. The passenger seat is torn to hell, and there's a dent on the passenger side fender (I'm cursed, I think, because my FC has a thrashed pass. fender as well!).
Other than that, the Paint is fine (I would call it off white) and the interior is rather trouble free. Drives fine, no stuttering or anything else the guide warned me about. OF course, knowing my luck, the minute I start her up tomorrow (yes, she's now in my possession, pics coming soon) she'll die and never start again.
Yay, I wont have to remove the AC like I did with my FB, because it AINT THERE! (or Cruise, damn useless contraptions in that FB)
Thanks for the help, and, do any of you US types know where I can get some bins? Because I love my FB's bins, and can't see driving a seven whithout them (especially if I need to get groceries in it, lol)
EDIT: Are you saying that if I remove that crappy wood, I have storage holes?

Geeze, I am really suprised that no one advised reading the FC stickies. The trim level questions have all been answered before. To summarize, on US cars depending on year and package, there may or may not have been PS, AC, PW, sunroof and rear seats.

If you're looking into buying an FC, and it has an AT, RUN! The AT turns the RX-7 into a gutless wonder.

After reasearching, it appears that backseats were indeed an option on almost ALL FC.
On a side note, I was definately bitten by the second gen bug. I saw another one in the paper, and just for *****, I called the guy to see what it was about (there was no price, just a phone number. I thought it would be a laugh.)
We got to talking, and he mentioned that he needs a Pickup truck.
Well, what do you know? I'm driving a pickup as my daily driver (and hating it!). So, like any good samaritan, I drove it right over to his house.
This one is freakin' cherry.
Silver exterior (although the paint is fading), and leather interior. It's an '87, and he says that it's a base model, but if I remember the scanned brochures correctly, it can't be.
Locking storage bins, electrical sunroof, power mirrors, power steering (Dammit! THe only flaw other than the paint!), AC, baloney cutters, damn near every option except the super duper whatever suspension and the cruise. It even has the factory spoiler and whatnot!
Man, this car is a dream for a person like me. 120K on the odo, fires up real nice, no hesitations at ANY RPM (and beleive me, we opened this sucker UP on the test drive!)
Unfortunately, we won't be trading for the truck. He needs money more than a truck, so I'm just selling the truck this weekend and picking the car up.
Pity that the Junker is just going to be a parts doner for my FB, but I dont need TWO running FCs and one lonely little FB.
*Drool* MMMmmmm, an 83 with a 13B.
*Double Drool* AND a cherry *** 87 to cruise around in!
