New car....new problems

So when i filled uo the gas tank the first time on my newly bought 1.3 non turbo 7, i discovered that the gas tank seems to not like to hold gasoline. So after dumping 8 gal of gas on the ground (EPA....ha!) i stops at the half way point. I figure a split tank. But i was wondering if the split tank could cause the rough idle and afterburn (backfire) that is random. May be fuel pressure loss due to split? Also with a gutted cat, does the car smoke a bit at higher Rpms?

thanks!!!!

i have to know so i can get the car out of state inspected!

Gas leak - You have to find it & fix it.
Backfire - minor problem, probably related to the rough idle.
Smoke at higher revs - could be just high mileage, or maybe it was overheated in the past.
Rough idle - could be many things, but not likely a fuel leak.

First do a compression test.
Look for plugs, wires, coils, injectors, or any connectors to those items.

Pull the little panel under the carpet on the right side of the hatch area, you should see the fuel tank-to-fill pipe connections. Inspect carefully. If she's leaking that bad, I wouldn't even be starting her up...

The fuel system is pressurized to a certain degree....compromising that could result in the rough idle.

okay so it is a split gas tank. all other connections are fine. A bit rusty but fine. The smoke....ill see. It is hard to tell the color because there are no cats and it is faint. Hopefully it is due to fuel pressure probs.
