new 88 gtu noob questions PICS!

Hello, first post think :0) If there was another I dont remember, but I just got an 88 GTU 2 days ago. I was driving @ night and I popped the highs up and BAM the whole northern hemisphere lit up. Im like wow those arnt stock cant be. I get out and I got some sort of projector setup.

Well I notice there is some blue light on the bottom so I lift the hood and pop the lights up and I See that there is wires coming from the light, but they arnt going to anything?

Any clue where they go or what I use to turn them on once I get them wired out? Thanks very much guys, I love the car :0) I came from a 94 cavalier 3 speed and this rotary 5 speed that wraps to 7k in a heart beat has been scaring the crap out of me the last few days. What is redline for this beast? I have been shifting @ 7.

Ok second question, the buy before me has some weird intake setup, but me and a friend are very confused it if is even helping @ all (maybe even hurting).

Any clue whats going on there? hehe.

3rd and last question. Have you guys ever heard of a weird alternator like squeel when shifting from higher rpm? Its not from the belt its from inside the alt. Im not sure if this is normal or what? Some honda kid was like wow your slow for a turbo (thought it was a blow off hehe) But I still beat him missing 3rd. I have the hardest trouble in the world finding 3rd :0(.

but anyways, Thanks for any info. Its nice to be here. :0)

the two little wires for the blue bulb normally are wired to the Black and red/black at the front turn signal.

Those are aftermarket ebay projector lights. Not exactly legal for use in the USA, but unless they are aimed poorly you probably can use them just fine. The blue light is for the City lights in Europe

Ok, so the only way I will be able to use the blue light is if I put it on a switch and only turn it on when im parking or when not on the streets? Thanks for the fast reply.

No, if you want to use the blue lights, you need to hook them up to the parking lights in the front bumper as I described.

You need to fix your air flow meter as well, since it is sitting at a funky power robbing angle

LOL those darn Honda boys...

Anyway if you are certain it's the alternater, I would just find a rebuild shop they make them good as new.

Let's not forget to do a full tune-up too.

hehe thanks. What do you recommend I do with my intake? You said its in a bad position right? Is that intake hose stock? I dont see how it would match up to the stock intake scoop. I feel like this isnt even as good as stock for some reason. Stock would at least get in nice cool air.

You are right. Simply putting that cone filter into the hot engine bay is losing you power. Search CAI (cold air intake) and you will find lots of stuff to do. You will get used to shifting into 3rd eventually, and redline for yours is 7000rpm I believe. S4's were 7000rpm, while s5's were 8000rpm.

The S4 (86-88) FC air flow meter (AFM) needs to be mounted horizontal. Your's is at an angle which has been repeatedly proven to cause a running rich or running lean inaccurate reading.

Top that off, with the above mentioned heat from the engine compartment, will reduce power almost all tmes except freeway speeds.

Like mentioned above, turn that AFM so the black plastic cover is facing up. It has to be level for it to read correctly. The intake hose is stock. The best bet is to make an air box around that cone filter to isolate it from hot engine air, and leave a cut out n the new box for the stock snorkel so it draws in cool air.

search for Custom CAI or prelude intake. using a prelude intake seems to be the cheapest/eaisest/best route for cold air.

Hi all again. Just went out and turned the little box around so that the black plastic was perfectly on top. It might just be in my head (or becuase its colder out now @ night) but the power seems to come A LOT sooner, and a lot smoother. Im going 2 take it to a dyno 2morrow and see if there is a difference between it. (unless there is some proof of this already done?)

Now I researched the CAI w/ the prelude thing. If I could get a little clerfication that would cool. Is it considered a CAI when they just put a prelude smooth pipe, the cone filter and the little box around the cone that has a hole from the stock intake? Or is it considered CAI only when the pipe drops down though a hole in the engine bay and goes *shrug* somewhere else... hehe I Dont know exactly where it goes. :0) But what one has the biggest improvement?

Again thanks.

ooooooooooookkkkkkkkkk im not sure yet, but I was looking up horsepower for my car, and I noticed that it said my car cant have ABS...... um .... how much is it going to cost me to install ABS on this thing? Im going to be dead pretty much the first time I stomp the breaks. (I have always had ABS and it has saved me MANY (read 10s) of times. I know it was an option for the GXL model, so they must make it for second gens. Help save a life. Let me know if its possible. IF not im going to have to sell this car. :0(

Odd, I could've sworn my 86 gxl has an ABS, I can't quite find it on the spec sheets though, but I'm nearly 99% certain that my car has ABS at the moment cause I've gotten into a couple near crashes by dazing out a bit and haven't died yet. As for the air box I'm pretty sure it'll work though it might not be as cool as drilling that hole down and removing your washer box. You could try going to an empty parking lot and just stomp down on the brakes.

You are gonna sell the car if it doesn't have ABS??? Are you that bad of a driver???

The cost to retrofit the rather poor ABS system that was optional on the 87-90 GXL and 87-88 Turbo and standard on the 89-91 Turbo would be as much as the car is worth.

You should learn how to drive first, before relying on electronics to save your butt. The FC without ABS stops quicker than many current/new cars with ABS. You just need to learn control.

^AMEN. I actually don't like ABS. Here's a bit of advice from someone who has never been in a fender bender.

1. Pay better attention to what's going on around you and make a mental note of where all the other cars/bikes/pedestrians etc. are.

2. If you find yourself in need to stop abruptly, Try not to stomp on the pedal...you'll probably only break traction and likely wind up taking longer to stop. press the pedal firmly and increase pressure as needed but try not to stomp on it!

3. If you DO break traction and/or you need to swerve around an obstacle, PUMP the pedal...if you have broken traction and are sliding...your will not be able to steer the car until you regain traction.

4. Go practice in an empty parking lot and learn to brake properly. You drive the car, the car does NOT drive you.

5. DON'T TAILGATE!!! I think the rule is 1 car length for every 10 mph...

I hate abs and would remove it if I ever bought an FC with it.
