new 86 GXL

looking at getting a new car, seems like it could be a good deal but has some issues, (sea reasons i can afford it ) anyway according to the current owner it Warms up and starts backfiring and dies then starts right up and runs fine for about 1 minute then does it again. injector issue maybe?

It could be a fuel filter possibly... Did you try giving it gas (driving it) before the minute is up?

A minute is a long time to run before quitting. It could be a poorly adjusted idle, with the thermal wax cam holding the throttle open to allow it to run, quitting when the throttle shuts.

I think that this engine is ok mechanically, it probably has a vacuum leak or a mal-adjusted sensor. I wouldn't be too afraid of it. (A compression check never hurts though).

Try giving the car some gas as it is quitting and see if you can keep it running. If it will run but not idle, there is little worry about big problems.

the car is a few hours south of me i just wanted some more knowledgeable opinions about it before i drive for a couple hours to pick it up. didnt sounds like it would be horrible to me but there may have been something else i didnt think of. again any idea on what it may be would be awesome so if i go down to get it i might be able to drive it home

A few questions:

How much are you paying? You don't have to tell me, but if it is more than $800.00 the body had better be in excellent condition and the interior had better be intact.

I paid $400.00 for my GXL (a few years ago) and it ran and drove, no body damage and no rust (the interior was TRASHED).

Are you ok with towing with a tow strap?

There is a good chance that as long as you give the car gas when sitting still it will stay running at stoplights and you can make it home, but if it dies and refuses to restart, you may have to pull start it (or maybe tow it all the way home - not recomended, but doable).

Things to look for in order of probability:

VACUUM LEAK - probably 75% of RX7 idle problems are due to a vacuum leaks.
Mal-adjusted sensor - Adjust per factory spec in Factory Service Manual the TPS is the most likely candidate.
Bad ignition timing - The backfiring indicates either a very rich fuel mixture (TPS) or poor ignition timing. The ignition timing should be dialed in per the factory service manual (See page 1-8)

Depending on how mechanically knowledgable you are, you may be able to fix the car completely before driving it. Chances are, you will need to work on it for a while to figure out the problem.

Please prepare to haul the car home, you may find the problem, but don't count on it.

Welcome to the club and best of luck to you.

(Save your money, your RX7 will be needing it very soon.)

its about a 2 hour drive to where its at, it would be nice but i dont plan on driving it home. far to easy to get stuck somehow. i'd be towing it with my truck so there wont be any issue there. timing and vaccum leaks i can do. hell i could pull the whole engine and rebuild it but id rather not. gotto get ahold of the guy again and make sure its still there when i can come down to get it but should be a fun car if i manage to get it home. and thanks again for the quick responses.
