Neutral switch question.

I'm just finishing up the install of a remote start unit on my 87 GXL, and ran into a small snag. I need to use the neutral switch to make sure I don't try to remote start the car in gear (it's a 5-speed), and have a relay all setup for the job, but the neutral switch wire is only putting out ~3v instead of the 12v it should be when the car is in gear.

Where does that switch meet up with the main harness? I'm running it off the ECU, and that's not working too swell. I'm suspecting that the switch or the connectors in between are corroded.

If fixing that isn't possible, is there a way to step up that voltage to 12v? I'm not a DC wizard, and haven't attempted something like that before. Thanks for any advice.

No, you didn't understand my past posts. The neutral safety wire is GROUND not 12 volts in neutral.

Any voltage you are seeing is because the ECU is hooked up

So the wire running into the ECU is actually suppsoed to be grounding? Crap, then I can just ditch this retarded relay run.

I took your advise and grabbed the nicer 160xv Viper remote start as well. I forgot that I'm such a stickler for "You get what you pay for". It's a much better unit, although it's kinda irritating how it flashes the lights at a 5 second interval when the remote start is going. I wish it just flashed once for the signal accept. There's probably an option in the programming section, but I haven't read through that much yet.

I just want to make sure before running the wires, the neutral witch does ground, not like the FSM says? Maybe I'm reading the FSM wrong as well (if it's grounding, the ECU would be spitting back some voltage to detect the ground, right?).

Should be able to program out the flash or cut the red wire in the brain to stop the flashing (read the install manual it will tell you).

And the factoyr manual specifiy says its grounding... in neutral the ECU reads less than 1.5 volts.

THat sheet is for the ECU... not the switch!!!

Ok, ok, just making sure. I'd hate to fry something. I really need to take a course in electronics so I understand more then the basics and what runs inside your computer.

Anyways, I hooked it up, and it's working fantastically. I also changed the prgoram to keep the lights on while remotly running, and all the safety features work.

Thanks for the help Icemark.
