Nessesity of s-afc or some type of fuel controler when runinng a "O.A" BOV

just curious if anyone has had expierence with running open atmosphere bov's with and without a fuel control system such as the safc. how much better did it work with it, is it recomended!?

Wont hurt anything. Im venting to atmosphere. Just make sure you cap everthing off when you install it.

I dont think a SAFC would really do much for that very small interval of time. You will run rich, nothing really you can do.

The OA BOV will not function any differently with or without an S-AFC. The S-AFC will have no effects whatsoever on deceleration conditions.

yeah, changing the airflow signal (what an safc does) really isnt going to do anything.

from http://www.apexi-usa.com/electronics_safc.asp

The second-generation S-AFC is a fuel computer that adjusts fuel/air ratio by modifying the air-flow meter/MAP sensor signal. The S-AFC features a user-definable, eight-point, adjustable fuel curve that can be set in 500 RPM increments. The range of fuel adjustment is +/- 50% at each of the user-defined setting points. On hot-wire vehicles, the Deceleration Air Flow Correction function is capable of curing the erratic idle and stall problems associated with open-atmosphere blow-off valves on hot-wire air-flow meter systems. The S-AFC is capable of monitoring and replaying the following data channels in Numerical, Analog Meter and Graph displays: Intake Manifold Vacuum/Boost Pressure, Air Flow Capacity, Intake Manifold Pressure, Karmann Frequency, Engine RPM, Throttle Position, and Air Flow Correction %.
From what im reading here, Apex'i states that it can correct it on a hot-wire type setup. We dont have a hot wire, but i would guess that, as far as the rich condition generated by the vented air, it could work the same?

Right now i have an Apex'i twin chamber BOV and i stall when i put it in neutral after WOT, so i am curious.

So the decel functions on the SAFC2 are useless to us. I was wondering about that recently.

bumping this because i am curious about a more detailed answer.

I dont think the decel function would be useless: i think that it might work even tho we dont run a hotwire. I cant seem to think of a reason that would make it not work.

Anyone have the real answer?

any reason for this belief? im not saying that im positive it DOES work, i would just like to know why the differences between the "flap door" and hotwire negate the usefulness of the decel functions.

As far as i can see/understand, there is a static variable in the fuel map of the stock ecu to account for the recirculated air. This must be a static variable because its entry point is after the AFM, so the car really has no accurate way of monitoring it. So, upon engine decel, wouldnt the S-AFC's functions be able to compensate for this still?

i think i just answered my own question. I looked at some pics of the S-AFC screens in-use.

So, are the decel functions just not even an option if you chose the flapper type sensor?

anyone with S-AFC experience?

Why do you even care? It doesn't hurt performance when you run rich for a split second during shifts.

but if you run it up in 2nd gear then push the clutch in and your car stalls, its extremely annoying.

Reading around a bit more on the net, i keep hearing that it doesnt work. I asked somone who has experience, and he just told me that you cant use the decel functions with an FC.

So oh well. If anyone cares to explain why the differences between flap and hot wire make the decel functions worthless it would be much appreciated! If not then, ok

Decel functions are still accessible if you choose flapper but I messed around with the settings and they didnt do anything noticeable.

Also I havent heard of anybody stalling from running rich inbetween shifts. I never had that problem.

I dont know why it doesnt work though.

Are you kidding? Theres no way in hell your car is going to stall when you shift.

*cough* u wanna come for a ride then?

And its not in between shifts. Im sure its rich between shifts, but its not long enough to stall.

If i run it up to 8000 rpm in 2nd gear lets say, and then just depress the clutch and hold it there, the rpms drop quickly to idle. On my car, they keep dropping till it stalls. Or rather, after running it up and hearing blow off, it just dies and wont idle.

So if u think my car doesnt stall when this happens since i put on the open BOV, you are free to come out to CT and come for a ride in it.

As for the guy who actually gave me some info from experience, thank you. I figured out what i wanted to kno, so im all set now

Here's a suggestion. Since there is absolutely no reason to do that in normal driving, don't do it. Problem fixed...

"Doctor! it hurts when i do this!"

"So don't do that..."

lol yeah i see what u mean, but i guess im kind of **** about how my car runs... so any issue like this i try to resolve. I guess im just going to re-install the stock BOV till i get a standalone.
