Need your opinion on this guys' THEORIES ON DRIVING A TII!

Talking Need your opinion on this guys' THEORIES ON DRIVING A TII!

This so-called RX7 Specialist mechanic told me that this is the PROPER way to drive a TII... NEVER boot it in 5th gear or even 4th gear....1st, 2nd, 3rd...and that's it on the HIGHWAY. Also, when your going up a slight hill or whatever, never use BOOST to go up the HILL. Always downshift and keep the car in VACUUM (negative boost)...or if your going too FAST...say your doing 70mph in 4th gear, and going up a hill, don't GAS the car enough that you go into BOOST...keep it on part throttle and stay in VACUUM! He says if I go into BOOST, I'm going to COOK the TURBO AND ENGINE. Does that make any sense?... What the heck is he trying to say? Can some elaborate on what this dude is trying to tell me, cause I can't make any sense out of that.

yeah if you don't use your turbo it'll last much longer, even better than that take it off and store it in a cool dry place and it will last forever.

right on, he's basically saying don't ever make use of your turbo, I mean its not good to be at WOT all the time, but its not gonna break your damn car doing it. Just puts some wear on it. Be sure to let your turbo and engine cool off after beating it up. and don't just beat it up, let it sit 30 seconds, then take her out and beat her up more, well try not to make a habit of it.
Turbo timers can help your turbo last longer after going heavy on it, by letting it cool down for a few engines after you leave your car.

I see your from B.C, there are a lot of mechanics their that think they know a thing or two about 7's but most of them are morons... there are some good guys... you just gotta watch your step... Get a turbo timer you'll be fine....I once toook my car to a local shop after me and my friend rebuilt the engine, because it was having trouble starting so i figured that we must have left off a vaccume hose or something and we couldnt find it.. .Anyhow this guy who said he "knows about rotaries" was like.. you know these things have apex seals eh ? maybe that could be your problem.. lol.. what a moron.. anyhow thats my story (p.s. that mechanic was in surrey lol.. ) hehe anyhow good luck and by all means beat away on that thing, thats what their for lol...

you just don't want to hold boost for too long. in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, you're out of the gear so fast while at WOT, where as you can hold 4th and 5th for mins. holding it in boost is where you get the most heat and wear. and also the highest chance to blow the engine. I never hold boost for more then 30secs to a min. if I stay longer my exhaust temps just keep climbing. for example up cypress mtn. I boost hard for a min then then take it easy for a few. your car will thank you.

how much boost are you running? he's probably just saying that if you are creaping a lot.

Funny you mentioned that...the GUY who told me this theory works out of SURREY too! A placed with the abbreviation of R.M. A place I've been going to for all my problems and engine repairs...I blew a couple engines and turbos, and they installed new ones for me. Finally found out, they were causing MOST of the problems, STOP going there and NOW I don't have ANY MORE PROBLEMS!

Driving a turbo II

The more you use a turbo, the less life it has. That goes for any car. Our turbos are not the newest in technology and heat up really fast (might I direct you to some pictures on this forum of "RED HOT" turbos). If you had an oil+water cooled ball bearing turbo it would last longer for sure.

However, Mazda designed our turbos KNOWING that they would get hot and still built the cars with them because the reliability factor was as high if not higher than the engine life. No point in replaceing the engine without replacing the turbo. If you are getting constant boost, who cares what that guy says.

Highway driving with cruise control at 120 KPH (74 MPH ish) 5th gear my car uses 1-2 psi of boost, I don't think that Mazda intended for us to not use our boost, and considering that when I give my car anything more than the weight of my foot of throttle my boost rises quickly. (Also I have a minor boost leak I am in the process of locating right now).

I think that this guy basically just gave you the advice to make your engine and your turbo last the longest. But what is the point of owning a car if you aren't going to give it life?

So constant driving up long hills & mountains should be in a lower gear vs 5th gear & boost?

Guess that makes sense.
