Dont confuse "GTUs" and GTU's. The GTUs is an extremely hard model to find.

Yes, GTUs are rare, only manufactured in 89-90.
(Not to be confused with GTU).

From 89-90 GTU is the base model. GTUs is the rare model. In 88, GTU was the rare model also.

The GTUs had everything the TII had, except the turbocharged engine. So I guess you could say that the GTUs was a NA TII

It is sort of the TYPE-R of 2nd gen RX7. No sunroof, no rear wiper, and etc...very rare!..So far i have only seen 2 here in LA. I know there are more though.

Yo,

About the GTUs: I've had mine for 2 years now, no major problems. Mazda created the GTUs to celebrate the domination of the IMSA GTU class in the 80's. Its kind of like a homogolation special. *wink*

Here are the good bits:

1. Manual windows (No pesky electricals to break)

2. No sunroof (Increased rigidity)

3. 4 piston aluminum front calipers (Same as TII, Da Bomb Sh*t.)

4. 4.30 rear gears (Beat your friends TII off the line, until he hits boost. *wink*)

5. LSD (For dorifto action)

6. Aluminum hood (Hella light)

7. 16" aluminum rims (15 lb's a piece)

8. Stiffened suspension (Same as TII)

9. Cloth Recaro-esque seats (Like R1 FD, no leather to slip around on)

10. No rear wiper (Who needs to see what's behind you? Again, dropped for lighter weight)

11. What else? Exclusivity. Its documented that they only made 100 in 1990, and I guestimate 900-1000? were made in 1989. They made 1500 10th Anniversary TII's.

They came in three colors: White, Red, and Black. That's it. The white has a blue interior, the red and black has black.

Here are some pics of mine:

They're big, sorry!

GXL's also had TII brakes and an LSD, but they also had auto-adjust struts (some like 'em, some don't) and power everything and "standard" gear ratios.

As far as I can tell, the springs are the same for *all* FC's except for convertibles, just the struts are different. (Good luck finding out the real story behind which cars got aluminum hoods - I've yet to find a clear answer because there are sooooo many exceptions!)

Now if only they made a Turbo version of the GTUs... IE a TII *without* the power crap and especially *without* the friggin' sunroof... wonder if I could find a TII and cut the roof out and re-skin it with a non-sunroof roof and headliner. Cheaper than having my back shortened so I can fit in one.

Yo,

Peejay, they DID make such a beast. It was called the Infini IV over in Japan. It was hardcore TII goodness. No fat, all muscle. You could have any color you wanted, as long it was blackgreen. *grin*

They also made Luces and Cosmos. But they didn't sell them here.

I'd rather have a modified 13BT, I've seen people put mucho deniro into 20b FCs just to get em running

A 20B conversion can be done at a "reasonable" price if you're handy.
