need some help with headlight burning out

ok so i have a 89 gxl-se and the other day my right headlight burnt out so i replaced it, it lasted for about 15 mins and burnt again, tried once more thinkin the light could be faulting but got same result. got back into the car and noticed that my dash lights wouldn't work either, i have heard there is a common problem with the headlight switch as i have checked all the fused and tested them too all seem to be good. is this the headlight switch and if so anyone got one for sale, i live in calgary ab and there aren't too many s5 at the wreckers out here.

First, it is either a GXL or a SE, not both.

2nd, what is the voltage on the voltmeter when this happens.

It should not be above 14.4 volts

my cousin went over it cause i HATE electrical and said it was steady at 12 something (pretty sure) and couldn't find a short in any of the wires or back connections, and had no idea why the int dash lights are gone, kinda hard driving at night with no dash lights lol

"12 something" would be BAD and not "volatage is good".

You got a voltmeter right on the dash board... do you not know how to read it with the engine running???

I would guess a bad alt that is charging over 15 volts, but without the ability to actually check anything it is impossible to say for sure.

And don't let your cousin near the car. He obvously has no clue if he is looking for shorts. A short would turn the bulb on all the time, melt a wire, or blow a fuse. It would not cause a bulb to burn out.
