Need some advice on tires.

Here's the deal. I own a 88 SE. I know, I know. Get rid of the 4-lug and solve the problem.

I have the 14" SE rims and I need rubber bad. The car is in the paint shop till next week and then I am pulling it out, driving down and having some new rubber laid on the rims.

What size/brand tire would you recommend? I am looking for all input here from anyone still running the 14" tires.

I can't afford to buy new rims or convert yet, I am planning to do this come summer, so I need a "get me by" tire till then.

5-lug conversion and 16" GTU rims will look sweet on my red ride.

I was looking at the Pirelli P4000 tires, HR rated and only $55 a tire locally. I need something that will handle some high speeds and the high pressure incurred from the FC's handling.

If you plan on using them only for the next few months, Id get the cheapest ones I could find. Save up for some good 15" when you do the conversion.(or 16 or 17)

I just got the Yokohama avs DB model. Put about 6000 miles on them. Handle just fine, great in the wet. Great in the snow. Very quiet. Highly recommended for a convertible.

Was $390 out the door at my local shop. You can mail order them from tirerack for a bit less.

I didn't check, but it seems they make them in 14". Mine are 15".

I just brought up a pic of the Yokohama Avid S/T and they have them at Tirerack in a 225/60/14 which should be close to the original sizing for speedo purposes.

They are only $46 a tire there. That is cheap. A local shop can order Yoko tires, so I may see if they can get these relatively close to the same price.

I agree... get some cheap used round rubber thingies (I don't refer to those as "tires," that term is reserved for a higher standard) to get you by.

buy some used tires. I have diffrent sets front to back but the car handled great at autoX. Plus for $35 a piece I dont feel bad sliding around after work. They are yokohama S309. they were almost new and cheap because the line was discontinued.

What size are you looking at?&nbsp I'm assuming 185/60/14?

I did a quick check on TireRack...

AVS intermediates $60
There were a number of new Kumho tires in the $30 range!

Stock size on the car is 185/70/14 but I don't want those pizza cutters on my car.

I was thinking of going wider. The Avid S/T in a 225/60/14 are only $46 a tire at Tirerack

I admit that the cheapest route is appealing, but I am also paranoid about a blowout on a used tire, especially after spending the last week sanding for hours each day, tearing everything off the car to prep it, and having to wait another week while paint is shot. I figure the $40-50 in savings I would get from used tires isn't really enough to justify it.

Try this out. The other size is the same tire in a 215/60/14 and go that route. Whichever tire is closer to the original diameter for speedometer purposes.
