Need some advice

Been a member for a while but never posted. So I guess this is kind of an intro too.

I'm looking to get two FC's around January. I've been reading a lot of posts here and I'm just curious to see what you think I should do. My initial plan is to buy two shells (no engine/trans or blown engine/trans) for about $500 each. Then buy two JDM engines for $1200-$1500 each. Probably spending about $3400-$4000. Then the next month upgrade the suspension with coilovers on both. Tein, D2, Stance something like that.

By the way these FC's are for drifting. I know they're harder to drift than a 240 and I'm ok with that.

I guess my main question is does the plan sound good or do you think I can find two FC's in good condition for $4000 or less and save on putting in the wrench time to install the JDM motors?

I have ZERO experience compared to you guys. I just figure the JDM motors would run better and longer than a US motor with probably over 150,xxx miles on it. And my brother and I can drop the motors in ourselves.

Any advice would be great. Maybe shops to stay away from or things to look for on the motors. Thanks in advance.

Dunno what your background is, but you're talking about a money pit here.
If you got the money to burn, then go for it.
Rule of thumb about projects: figure your budget and then DOUBLE IT.

No, not necessarily.
True, on average, J-spec engines have lower miles, but these are usually very hard miles or the engines have been sitting around and in very bad condition.
Look for places which have good warranties - you might want to check out the Good Guy / Bad Guy section to see if there is vendor feedback.
Remember, low prices don't mean best.
Spotty businesses will give you a lot of hassles if the engine is no good - look for ones that do compression tests BEFORE they ship.
Bottom line, J-spec engines are crap shots.
I'd rather tear the J-spec engines down and rebuild them myself for peace of mind.

Look at your numbers. Let's assume you're going to pay the max of what you listed above. That's 2 shells at $500 ea. and 2 motors/trans at $1500 each. There's $4000 without blinking. Now, you've got to think about expenses to get the vehicles and motors to your location. Now that they are at your house you have to install them. I understand you say you can do this but it takes time and time = money. Now that the motor/tranny/ecu/wiring harness is installed you have to get it running. Once running you are going to want the necessary (and some not) upgrades for drifting. Springs, struts, bushings, sway bars, legal seat(s) maybe, harness(es), gauges (at least the bare necessities), some sort of fuel management (pump, injectors, a way to control them), wheels/tires, tires, tires, tires (doesn't have to be special but your going to want something lighter and of quality). You see, the list goes on. It sounds good on paper but we all know once you jump in you don't get back out. It will be an ongoing "moneypit," as RETed said above. $4000 and some time will get you a base to start off with. Also as Ted said, you really should rebuild the motor when you get it. Hell, it's already out of the car and you'll save yourself a huge headache in the end.

At least double. At the very least.

Thanks for the advice. We have about 10k to work with. I guess I have to think long and hard about it.
