need quick help with front hub bearing and racer problems
im installing the 5 lug hub on my first gen. when i received the hubs there were no bearings in there so i bought new ones. well now im faced with a major problem. i packed the bearings with grease got everything ready to go but the bearings only go so far in that theyre flush with the out face on the front and the rear of the hub. when i slid it onto the spindle it wont go on anywhere near far enough. i know the bearings are in as far as theyll go as they reach a lip. i have heard stories about how hard it is to remove the races from these hubs, could it be that the old races are still in the hub? if so, is there any way to check and see if they need changing and possibly run these with the new bearings or do i need to get the old racers out for sure? thanks
Since the races are such a pita to remove, I'd bet that the races were still in the hubs you bought. You can tell by looking. the races will tapered and smooth while the bare hub will be straight on the side with a lip where the race will sit. To get the old races out, go to a machine shop. they can weld a bead to the old race and then press it out. I had it done for $15 dollars for both races on one of my hubs. Hope that helps!
