Angry Need HELP with TII project!!!PLEASE!!!

I'm probably going to get eaten alive for this by the search police but I'll lay it out straight. This forum is almost too big now. Hard to search through 500 posts of all kinds of different topics that just so happen to have your KEYWORD in it. So please give me a brake. I've probably spent more time on the internet in search for information regurading different issues in the last week than you all did this last year. So please help.

The brief... I bought a 1988 TII from a guy about an hour north of San Diego without a motor. Good price so I did it. Towed it down to my apartment and pushed it into my garage. Then I purchaced the little things I needed. Engine, Exhaust, FCD, Fuel Line blablabla. The motor is a jspec S4 that I purchaced from SPD Racing in Ramona, GOOD guys by the way. Well now I have everything back together after some struggles and such but it's together. Probably won't win any engineering awards but I might get a good effort pat on the back or something at a science fair because this was the first time I've really ever done anything like this.

The current situation is I HAVE NO SPARK. I checked the coils/ignighters per the FSM and checked out good. I'm getting a good 12v from the plugin going to the coils and on the other one I've got the .3v for the timing or something like that. The CAS is good per the FSM as well so I'm lost now. I can only assume that the ECU is bad or something higher than me is wrong. Maybe God hates me. I really don't know. PLEASE HELP ME GURU's. If anybody in the SD area would be kind enough to drive to Scripps Ranch and help me out I'd treat them to pizza or something. I'M begging.

BTW. Happy Holidays!!!

CURTIS LAMASTERS

p.s. Sorry for the mispellings

1) Does the tach "bounce" when cranking?
If it does, the CAS, ECU, and trailing coils are working.

2) Do ANY of the coils work / spark?
How are you checking spark?
If all of them are dead, most likely it's the ECU or CAS - it's very rare all three coils die at the same time.

3) Can you do an error code scan?
This will give you a better idea if the ECU is bad - there is a "self check" function.

RETed..

1) The tach does not bounce while cranking. I take it that if it doesnt than either the trailing coils, cas, or ecu are not working... Correct?

2) I am not getting any spark on any of the coils. I'm checking by taking the plug wire inserting a spark plug and putting the spark plug next to a ground. Then having my wife tell me if there is any spark coming from it. She says no.

3) I don't know how to scan for error codes. However I have stumbled across your web site and am going to go purchace the needed parts to make the tester.

Thanks RETed

Do an error code scan on the ECU.
This should narrow the problem down to the CAS or the ECU.

Have you done any repairs on the care prior to it not working recently?

RETed..

No repairs. Just put the motor in about 3 weeks ago and have tired to make time to work on the car on weekends. About 5 minutes ago I changed out the coils/igniters with known good ones and still didnt work. I really didn't think it would but I figured what the heck. According to the FSM the CAS is good. To do the error code check I need to do the steps you have on your web site correct?? Do you have any tricks to figuring out if the wires between the CAS and the ecu are good or bad. Thanks again for the suggestion.

It could also be a fuse, couldn't it? I seem to remember my tach didn't bounce, and it as because I ble a fuse under my dash. I could be wrong. And, I didn;t read everything, so Ted might have said that already. Just my .02

are you sure the air flow meter is working. a f'd up air flow meter will cause the tach not to bounce when trying to start.

i'm with Joe, double check your fuses, paying close attention the EGI fuse in the engine compartment, it is the 30 amp fuse nearest the engine.

did the car have an air flow meter when you bought it?

Waitaminute...
You did an engine installation recently???
Did you make sure the main ground on the top of the engine is secure?
Did you make sure the main ground above the starter is secure?

1. The AFM has NOTHING TO DO WITH SPARK. Fuel...yes....spark ....NO

2. At the small, white, two socket connector at the LEAD coil, see if you have 12v at the black/yellow wire. IF you do the fuse is good.

3. Go to the ECU and pull the plugs off. With the key nowhere near the car, and the ignition OFF, check for 0.5 or less ohms on the ground wires. 3G, 3A, 32R,2C. If the grounds are not there, then go reconnect the ECU ground on top of the rear rotor housing. Not that damn useless ground near the wiper motor......the ground on top of the rear rotor housing approx 3inches left of BL 0.

4. IF you have good grounds, then pull the elect plug off the boost/pressure sensor. Go to the Brown/Red wire. Retrieve the car keys and turn the ignition to ON. See if you have approx 5volts on the brown/red wire. If there is no 5volts.......you have no reference voltage in the ECU and the coils will not fire if there is no ref voltage. You look at the boost sensors ref voltage because it's easy to look at NOT because the boost sensor has squat to do with coils firing.

Hailers, but a bad afm will cause the tach not to bounce while cranking, and that's one of his symptomns. i know that for a fact. just throwing out ideas, like all of us. and make sure the engine fuse inside the car is good.

In case there's any doubters........either pull your cas out or install a spare cas on the harness for the cas.

. Pull one of the two lead coil wires out of it's coil and lay it just inside the bore. Pull the afm plug off the afm.

Turn the key to ON. Spin the cas. Spark WILL jump b/t the wire and the coil bore as you spin the cas.

Case Closed

Well...thank you all for you input. The problem ended up being the ECU. Replaced it got in the drivers seat....turned the key and crank crank crank ...vrooomm....na na na na na na. haha. Good deal that it was something easy because if it that didnt fix it my next step was going to be replace the CAS. To some of you that is easy as pie..but I'm still a little scared to do so. Well everybody....Take care and thank you.

P.S. I would like to throw some bones to SPD Racing for helping me out once again and lending me an ecu to trade out.. Thanks a Million
