Need Help...tach And Gauges Dead

Need Help...tach And Gauges Dead

I just acquired a 88 gxl. I was trying to check up on any problems. I fixed the power windows, the wipers, then i tried fixing the suspension toggle switch thing. The connection sparked on me and the tach and gauges died. The door is open sound stays on 24/7 now also. If I connect two electrical points on the suspension toggle switch, the tach and gauges come back to life but the tach moves around like its on crack. The door is open sound gets weak also when I do this. I checked all fuses and they are fine. Any insight would be helpful and gladly appreciated. Thanks.

sounds like you fried the ecu maybe. next time disconnect the battery before yo uwork on electrical stuff.

Aren't all these controlled by the CPU (by the fuse panel)?

Explain the switch your working with. Its the one that has Normal/Sport?????? written on it?

Look one last time at the 7.5a METER fuse.

Now go to the rear of the car, and pull the plug off the AAS control box. With the plug off, is all well now? AAS unit is somewhere near the spare tire, close to the right rear tail light assy.

When I was fixing my wiperswitch, I put some power through it to see if it would work, and I heard something click. The next day my tach and stuff wasnt working, turned out I fried one of the fuses. Look under the dash in the fuse panel, pull them till you find one that is blown, and replace

Also, sometimes a fuse may look ok, but it's really blown. Swap a known good one for the meter's one and see how it goes. You could also look online in the service manual and trace where that switch goes.

thanks for the replies everyone...yea i tried to unplug the unit before with no luck...im going to try to replace the fuse and see what happens...ill keep you all posted...thanks for all the help

Give us the color of the wires you were messing with that blew the METER fuse. Like black/yellow and blue/yellow. When those two are jumpered at the switch, that seems to be the same as putting the switch in SPORT. You shouldn't jumper either of those wires to any of the other two wires in the plug. The other two wires are for ground(black) and illumination of the little light bulb (red/black).

If you jumpered the black/yellow to the blue/yellow.....you've got a problem with the AAS CONTROL UNIT possibly.

hello

ill check on the wires when i get home...thanks for that fuse box diagram...mine dont have a cover and i really need it....thanks....well for now i connected the red and red/black wires together to allow the gauges and tach to work...only thing is that the warning lights, tach, and gauges only work when the light is kept on...when its off...its dead...ill check out what exact wires i was messing with...thanks...
