Need Help With Stripped Bolt!!

Hey guy, so both of my exhaust bolts/studs broke yesterday, the ones going from the bottom of the header to the first cat. How would i go about getting these out? that's really all that's stopping me other than going out and getting the actual stud.

Any ideas would help.

Thanks!!

-Garrett

If you mean you rounded the corners of the head, you could try cutting a strip in the top with an angle grinder and use a screwdriver in the new slot, or weld something to the old head (like a new head).

You can replace the studs. Take 2 of the nuts that go on the stud, put them on it and tighten them against eachother. Then use a wrench to try and loosen the nut closest to the engine. The stud should come out pretty easily.

Why do more work than necessary? Theirs nothing wrong with the stud holes. He just needs new studs.

ya, the holes are fine, just the studs are broken.

the way they broke is the side that actually bolts up to the cat, with the nut and everything, is completely smooth, and i know how to do the 2 nut thing, BUT, the other side of the stud that is screwed in to place is down in the hole... do you know what i mean? if anything i'll try to take some pictures.

Try an easy out, you would drill a small hole in the center of the broken stud and then take the appropriate sized easy out and try to remove it.

Is any part of the stud sticking out? if not then you need to drill and tap. If you can grab onto some of the stud they make a tool that works off leverage kind of like a pipe wrench, or you can try a vise grip. Either way make sure to soak it with some penetrating oil, or heat it up a little. And you can also take a punch and hammer and knock at the stud to help loosen up the build up in the threads. Good luck.

Easy outs can be obtained at any parts store and most hardware stores.

Heat, heat, heat. Heat the surrounding area. Makes a huge difference. If no torches you can use a Mapp gas setup

Trust me, goto the hardware or the auto parts and get an easy out, use some sea foam penetrant and just do as I suggested earlier. Drill a small hole for the size easy out you get and then just use the proper tools. It will save you time, and headaches. I had a dozen or so bolts break off on me when I was working on my car, and this truly easy an easy and effective way.
