need help putting together the pieces

so i just got my new throttle body on my car, and when i started up for the first time it idled at about 1000-1200 RPMs, which im pretty sure is high but ive looked everywhere and seen so many different ratings of where it should be at im not sure if i should lower it or leave it... but i went ahead and drove it to break it in and take it up there a bit because i just replaced the TB and exhaust gasket and when i would get up and go it would have hesitation at about 5000 RPMs, so i didnt take it past that. then i went again and it let me take it to 6, then again up to 6 and 1/2, but still had hesitation past that point. then when i drove it to my friends (shifting at 3500) something happened and my muffler can got a hole burned through it and so my car litterally started shooting flames (its an NA) up to a couple feet and at first i was like sweet til it started melting my paint and my left tip started turning orange and i saw the muffler can after the cat... all i can think is its from the fact it was flooded and maybe gas was still in there and it ignited? i dunno but after that it had problems back firing like crazy too... if anyone was kind enough to read this whole thing and has any idea whats going on and if these are even realated please let me know! im open for any suggestoins!

Idling at those RPM's is a bit high, but it's not necessarily a problem. Granted, it's not ideal, but how often are you at idle? Probably about 2% of the time, so no biggie.

As far as the hesitation, not a clue.

ya i didnt think it would be too big of a deal but i didnt know if it would be more profitiont to lower it down...

oh and just went out to it a lil bit ago and turned it on but didnt drive it let it idle for about 10 minutes reved it here and there and the black smoke almost killed me i had to open every door and garage i could hardly breath, but no flames but then again the flames would start usually when i would drive it last night but also once i would stop driving they would just be continuous...
