Need Help!!!!!!! My Car Is DEAD!!

Ok, here is the deal. I removed the stock exhaust manifold, and I stripped 2 of the holes, and broke the other two studs. So, my car is jacked. Here is te question: Can I retap the two holes, and have a shop remove the broken bolts, or will I have to totally redrill the holes so I can install threaded sleeves to hold on the bolts? This is what my mechanic neighbor said will have to be done. How much should this cost?? If it will be $800+, I'm gonna do a turbo engine and drivetrain swap, if less than $800, I am gonna get it fixed, and keep tweakin it. THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!

why the hell would it be 800 bucks?! i think you should probably just retap those holes...and for the other 2 studs, drill them out and retap, thats what i would think....get some more options first....is that u pulling your eye down in your avatar?

Oh man that sucks. Not much help I can give you... but i agree, $800 is too much for that. I know you can but almost any nut and bolt or washer from the dealership for around or less than $5.

I saw your thread and I thought that your engine blew... *thinks back to OMP line thread* , got me worried !

Good luck!

Well, my neighbor has been a mechanic since Vietnam, and he says since I tried to remove the studs when the engine was hot, I ripped out the threads in 2 holes. The other 2 holes have broken studs in them. He said for the 2 that had the threads ripped out will need to be drilled out, and have some sort of sleeve with threads in it inserted, and the other have the bolts drilled out. This will require pulling the engine. So, he said it will cost around $600-$800. Ted, Hailers, Irv....Any idea?

I think the engine hs to come out so they can put heili-coils in the striped out holes. That means they have to drill the present holes larger in order to install the heli-coils. The holes have to be drilled drilled straight or square and concentric with the present hole pattern. There just is'nt enough room with the engine in the car. If they are not drilled concentric with the present holes, the manifold holes won't match. Now I just know someone out there can do it without pulling the engine but I have no idea how they find the room for a drill unless its a right angle drill and they use some sort of drill block to keep things square. The ones that are just broken off they probably could get out with the engine in the car by using a right angle drill and easy out. I'd have to take the engine out to fix it.Does not mean there isn't some talented person who could do it in the car. I just don't see how though. EDIT: Go down to your local PEPBOys and you'lll be able to find HELI-COIL kits. They usually have the heli-coil with the sized drill bit that is required for the hole that needs to be drilled. Once you see that drill bit, then you will realize why the engine would have to be removed. Not room for drill bit and drill.

Well ****. So how much does it cost to do this? I'm not gonna do it myself, as this is too big of a job for mr to tackle.

Anyone know how much $$$$ this will cost me off hand? DO I just take it to any shop to do this?? Or does it need to be a rotary specific shop??
I just need to know if it would be cheaper for me to buy another engine.

Dude!!! I don't know the exact cost for the Heli-Coil set but I'm sure that you can get those for about $30.00 or less at PEP boys. As staided by HAILERS - is to drill the hole "square" (straight) you then insert the coils (look like little springs) and your set!

I used to do a number of these in the Army on Tanks and APC's. I saw a lot of guys make matters worse by not using some ZEN. I gained a reputation as a "Master Thread Repairman" Hahahahahaha (that was another life)

GOOD LUCK

TJ

Right, but I will have to pull the engine. I don't have the tools or the know how for all that. I know how to install the heli-coils, and how to drill out the old broken studs, I just don't know how to pull the enigine. And what is ZEN?
